FIRST GRADE NEWS
JUNE 2ND -JUNE 6TH
JUNE summer weather has begun! The children are enjoying their last days together.
As teachers we are extremely busy with end of the year paperwork, evaluations and keeping the routine going at the same pace. Your child is still learning important concepts in the different subject areas. We plan to fill the last days with as much curriculum as we can to provide them with as much preparation for 2nd grade as possible.
We also want to provide activities that will remind them of all they have accomplished in First Grade. We are working on a Memory book. I will be adding some classroom photos to their booklet. They are having fun working on it a little at a time.

Curriculum News:
Religion: This week we were unable to have our normal class time for this subject due to special student visitors that have been Reading buddies with the Spanish Cohort. During this time, the English Cohort got to do some extra Superkids work but Religion had to be cancelled. We will be going to Mass tomorrow and celebrating with PRE-K who is hosting the Mass.! We were able to do an Art project about the ASCENSION of THE LORD.
Superkids: We continue to learn more contractions and also about "Trickers" that are words that we can only read by trying short or long vowel sounds. Example: Open - if you try to read it with a short o it would sound funny so then we know right away that it should be read with a long o!
Math: The children are working on Subtracting 2 digit numbers without regrouping.
Science: We are having a fun unit on "La Granja" or The Farm. They are learning animal names and reviewing plant names that grow on a farm. We are also learning about the different kinds of chores that are important for the farm to produce products that get to our stores for us to purchase.
Social Studies: We end our unit on Asia by learning about INDIA and important rivers, desert land and mountain ranges on a map the children are creating. "Las Himalayas" are the highest mountains in the world. We are learning about the culture and sorting pictures that show scenes from that part of the world. The children write in their S.Studies journals during this time period and color in their maps.
Have a Wonderful Week! P.S. Children need to wear socks everyday even if it is hot!
