Juan and the Chupacabras

Juan and his cousin Luz, were being told the old folktale of the 'Chupacabras' for the first time. They listened in amazement as Juan's abuelo told them how he had fought off the Chupacabras in the cornfield next to his house. Juan and Luz decided it was their turn to face the Chupacabras and they made their way out to the cornfield.

CRITERIA FOR HIGH QUALITY MULTICULTURAL LITERATURE

1. Includes member of a "minority" group for a purpose other than fillinga "quota."
This book is a Hispanic folktale in which, all of the characters in the book are Hispanic. In the United States, people of hispanic culture are considered a minority group, but this book takes place outside of the United States.

2. Demonstrates unique language or style.
Something I really like about this book is that it is written in both English and Spanish on all pages. It even uses terms like 'abuelo' throughout the portion written in English. The title, the text, even the about the author and about the illustrator pages are written in both languages.

3. Names of characters should be culturally authentic and their personalities should reflct believable attributes.
The names of the characters in this story are Juan, Luz, and although they never say his name, abuelo, is an important part of the story. These names clearly reflect hispanic culture and are different from most names that children in the classroom have probably ever heard before!

LESSON IDEA

Grade Level 1


1. RL. 7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events.

The students will use the illustrations to predict what will happen in the story, and make observations about what they notice about cultural differences.


Lesson Procedure
-The lesson will start out talking about the word "folktale," and ask students if they have any stories they have heard from their families, and tell students that the book we are going to read today is a hispanic folktale that has been told for many many years.

-Tell students that as I read the book to be looking hard at the pictures for details.

-Read the story aloud.
-Read the first page, and as students what they notice about the characters in the story.
Read the second page and ask what they notice about the picture (where is abuelo at in the picture, what does this tell us?)
Show third page/picture and ask students what they notice/what do they think is about to happen? Then read the page.
Show the next page/picture and ask the students what does the picture tell us? Read page.

And so on....

-After finishing the story have students illustrate their own version of a 'Chupacabras' and write a brief narrative about how they would tell the story of the 'Chupacabras'. Using details they remember from the book!
