Jackrabbit Journal
March 2020
FROM MRS. FRANK
Our students have a busy day every day at Owens. It is so much easier to learn if you have enough rest every night. Please help your student by ensuring that they have a set bedtime and that they are getting to sleep without any electronics that may cause a distraction. . We are also encouraging our kids to wash their hands in order to keep all of our Jackrabbits healthy and at school learning. I hope that you have a wonderful Spring Break! Thank you for sharing your children with us.
LUNCH VISITORS
Due to testing, the students will have schedule changes and no lunch visitors or lunch drop offs on the following date:
WESTERN DAY
Save the date!
Western Day will be held on Friday March 6th. We invite you to come watch their performance, which will be held during your child’s PE class time. They will be showing off their dances that are being taught in PE.
Western Day will be held in the cafeteria and there will be no lunch visitors or lunch drop offs.
Please remember that this is a regular instructional day and students might be missing tests, etc. if they are taken out early.
If you are planning to attend Western Day at Owens, please remember that a photo ID is required for all visitors. Sign in will be in the gym.
Here are some event reminders:
· No strollers
· Limit 4 visitors including children

FROM THE CLINIC
Health Reminders: A healthy school environment requires the cooperation and effort of us all working together. During this time of year we tend to see a higher incidence of strep throat, flu, respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses. We would like to remind everyone that they can help to protect themselves and their families form many of these airborne illnesses. Follow the Habits for Good Health listed below recommended by the Center for Disease Control.
Habits for Good Health
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze – throw the tissue away after you use it. If you do not have a tissue, cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water especially after you cough or sneeze. If you are not near water, use an alcohol based hand cleaner.
• Stay away as much as you can from people who are sick.
• If you or your child gets the flu, stay home from work or school. Do not go near other people so that you don’t make them sick too.
• Try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs often spread this way.
• Dress for the weather. Come to school dressed for our Texas weather, layers work great this time of year.
SEASONAL ALLERGY TIPS
If you know your child has severe seasonal allergies and needs to take medication, please try to give it to them at home to avoid worsening of symptoms at school. Seasonal allergy symptoms can include red/itchy eyes, watering of eyes, eye swelling, sore throat, runny noses, and sneezing. There are many over the counter medications for children that can help with these symptoms. Children's strength Benadryl is a common one, and it is available in a non-drowsy formula. Your doctor can help you with a good medication option for your child also. Often times, a doctor may also recommend using allergy relief eye drops to help with eye itching/irritation. It is important to try to avoid allergy triggers by following some basic steps: keeping windows closed, bathing after being outside, avoid lying in bed after being outside for long periods to avoid spread of pollen or grass spores contaminating your sheets, washing clothes and sheets often to get rid of allergens, and using allergy relief medications such as antihistamines or other medications that may be recommended by your doctor.
