5th Grade Transition to Middle School Meeting

Current 5th Grade parents and students are encouraged to attend our Middle School meeting on Tuesday, March 7 at 6:30pm. Families will learn about the middle school program and recieve the program of study. This meeting is also for any guests that would like to enroll in the middle school for the 23-24 school year. We encourage guests to learn about the Chatfield middle school at this program.

Kindergarten and First Grade Parents - Please RSVP!

Mrs. Jelneck and team will host a Reading Fluency workshop for Kindergarten and First Grade parents and children on March 9.


The reading team will provide an informational session about fostering reading fluency at home. Fluency is how to read a book or other printed work easily. This includes being able to read at an appropriate pace, read words with expression, and read words correctly.


The schedule will be as follows:

5:30-6 Parents will attend fluency presentation with Mrs. Jelneck while kindergarten and first grade students simultaneously listen to Biscuit books with Mrs. Reamer, Mrs.Rasnick, Mrs. Messenger, Mrs. Callans AND BISCUIT himself!

6-6:30 Meet in the cafeteria for pizza and salad dinner

6:30-6:45 Find a new Biscuit book to take home for FREE to practice fluency

Maple Syrup Party and Open House! March 18

Students will be hosting a maple syrup open house at the Willows Ecology Center at Chatfield on Saturday, March 18, 930am-230pm. Please join us to celebrate Spring and let us share everything we know about the miraculous world of Maple Sugaring. Tapping trees, processing firewood, hauling buckets of sap, filtering and canning the finished syrup have all become part of the school day during this busy spring season. Students will be offering samples of our Maple syrup with French toast. Students will be selling their homemade Maple syrup, homegrown pork sausage, and whole organic chickens! This event is free and open to the public.

Student led activities include

  • See the evaporator in action

  • Winter tree identification

  • How to Tap a maple tree and equipment

  • Sugarbush tours

  • Filtering and Canning

  • Historical sugar production by Native Americans

  • Cutting firewood with a crosscut saw

  • Free Samples!

Sibling Enrollment for 2023-2024

If your currently enrolled Chatfield student has a sibling that will be starting kindergarten at Chatfield in the new school year or has a sibling that would like to enroll for the new school year, you must complete and turn in an updated Sibling Enrollment form. This form is due to the school office by April 3, 2023. Siblings of enrolled Chatfield students are given priority for any vacancies during enrollment of new students. Unfortunately, we are not able to guarantee priority enrollment if the form is turned in after the deadline.

Parent Teacher Conferences Coming Up

Please watch for information about scheduling a March conference with your child's homeroom teacher. Teachers schedule these conferences from March 6-17. We expect to have 100% of parents attend March conferences.

Enrollment Opportunities for the 2023-2024 School Year

In the coming weeks we will host several events for families interested in learning about enrollment at Chatfield. If you know of a family that would be interested in enrolling at Chatfield, please let them know about the dates listed below. We appreciate you sharing this opportunity with those who may be interested. The registration for the Lottery deadline is April 3, 2023. STEM Acitvity

If your child loves Science, you might like to get involved with this upcoming event! More detailed info is provided in the attachments section of this newsletter.


The event—which is free and open to all ages thanks to generous donations and grants—will feature more than 100 hands-on, interactive science, technology, engineering and mathematics exhibits and activities by SC4, Michigan Technological University’s Mind Trekkers, the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum and the Leslie Science & Nature Center. It also will feature Challenger Learning Center at SC4 mini-missions, virtual reality experiences, live sturgeon and other wildlife exhibits, rocket launches, robotics technology and more.


Activities will take place in SC4’s Fieldhouse and Experience Center. Guests are welcome to stay for the entire 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. event or just drop in for as long as schedules allow. For more information and to register, please visit https://sc4.edu/stem-fest/

P.I.E. Meeting - March 13

Our next PIE meeting is March 13 at 4pm. We hope you can make it! This is a great way to get invovled with the school, meet people, and talk with the PIE leadership and school directors.

Egg a Peep - PIE Fundraiser

Last week we sent home forms for Egg a Peep. This is a fun activity provided by PIE. You can send a little candy treat to your child or children's friends. The form is attached below. Each egg is $1. Forms and payment are due March 15 and Egg a Peeps will be delivered the week of April 4.

PIE Chili Cookoff and Winterfest was a Success!

We would like to thank PIE for a fun Chili Cookoff and Winterfest. Guests enjoyed delicious chilis, salad, and desserts, along with sledding, roasting marshmallows, and dancing. It was a fun family evening. Thank you to everyone who brought food to share!

Congratulations Spelling Bee Contestants

Congratulations to all of our Chatfield Spelling Bee participants!


Ensley De Yonker will represent Chatfield in the fifth and sixth grade Lapeer County Bee and Logan Wilcox will represent Chatfield in the seventh and eighth grade Lapeer County Bee. The Lapeer County Spelling Bee will be March 21 at Lapeer County Ed-Tech. All of the Chatfield Spellers are listed below. Congratulations!

Boy's Basketball Teams Wrap Up Successful Seasons!

We would like to congratulate our Boy's basketball teams as they wrap up successful seasons! We are very appreciative of the dedicated coaches that volunteer their time to teach both basketball and sportsmanship. The teams were coached by parents Jason VanDerWerken, Ryan Young, Dan Barnes, and Jason Martin. We are very thankful for these great coaches!
