Peak School Library News
SEPTEMBER 2015
welcome back!
New pencil case, new lunchbox, new shoes... new books in the Library! We've started off the year running and are stocking the shelves with the newest, brightest and best books we can find. Scroll down to see what treasures your little treasures will be able to find in the Library.
We also are welcoming new staff, hosting new authors and always thinking of new ideas to introduce into the Library so it really feels like we have a lot to look forward to.
Remember, if you would like to get involved in any way, please drop in and find out how you can help, we are always keen to have volunteers on board.
Chris Bradford coming to Peak School!
We couldn't get more excited about the fact that the author of the Young Samurai series is coming to Hong Kong, and what's more, he is coming to Peak School! Publisher's Weekly called his books 'the literary equivalent to a black belt' and the first book has been nominated for 10 awards. He will be presenting to Years 3-6 on 30th September in the school. For more information about the author, his books and what they are about, visit the YOUNG SAMURAI page and get the full scoop.
new staff
We are delighted to have a new Library Assistant in our midst to help with the day to day running of the Library. Susan Gaylard joined us last week and will be working a couple of days a week to keep things in order and help with classes. Welcome Mrs Gaylard!
new titles on our shelves!
Chapter books (9+)
We are stocking up on the latest releases in series fiction which the kids love (there is something about collecting) but also some fantastic one-off stories, including this one by Lisa Graff about a 5th grader who yearns to be more than almost at everything...
Picture books (5+)
We have delved into the short-list for the Golden Dragon Book Awards (see below for the complete reading list) to stock our picture book shelf this term. Loads of fun, inspiring, unusual and interesting books to choose from.
Award winners
Brown Girl Dreaming falls into many categories: award winning, poetry (it is written in free verse), biography AND it fits in with Year 6 Unit of Inquiry so it ticks pretty much all of our boxes. A great read for years 9 and up.
golden dragon book awards
Last year, The Golden Dragon Book Awards kicked off with some fantastic picture and chapter books in various age ranges. This year will be no different and we are getting all of the titles in so the children have plenty of time to borrow and read them in the library before the voting date next Spring. For a complete reading list visit The Golden Dragon Book Awards site.
homework help
Peak School Library is not just a place for books. We are a hub of information where students can access research material for their Units of Inquiry (UoI). To this end, we provide on-line resources which have been carefully curated for each year group. Visit our NETVIBES page and click on the tabs for your child's year group and UoI (Sharing the Planet, Who We Are, etc) to find useful links to websites that will help them with their studies.
trying to find books?
Did you know that you can search what's in the Library from home? Just go to the Peak School home page, click on Teaching and Learning and then choose Library. Next, click on the Peak School Library Database (Olly) and you are there! Or even better, click on this Library Database link and then bookmark the page.
Type in the name of the book or author you are looking for in the box at the top of the page and you should be able to see if we have it and if it is available to borrow. If we don't have what you're looking for - and you think we should - drop us a line at library@peakschool.net and we will see if we can get it.
like us on facebook
If you do, you will have access to all sorts of updates, reading lists, links to great sites and thoughts as they enter our mind (which may or may not be a good thing...)
Come on, you know you want to!
