From Mr. R's Desk
BOBCAT NATION,
In keeping with this week's theme [Data and Assessment], here is my experience(s) with this topic. During my teaching days at Vela MS, we were very competitive when it came to our 8th Grade US History scores. At the time, Vela MS was one of ten middle schools in Brownsville ISD and our department wanted to have the highest scores in the city. Year-in and year-out, we were one of the top middle schools. A few factors led us to those high scores but more than anything, I believe it was our Benchmarks that paved the way. We were very intentional when it came to assessments and the data we collected from our Benchmarks. The data kept us focused and on track to help diagnose and adjust our lessons. The data also helped us group our students for our tutorials.
The Benchmark Process at Vela MS
- Teachers created Benchmarks/CBAs for the year, using the YAG.
- Benchmarks/CBAs occurred every marking period.
- We treated Benchmarks like the real test.
- The day after each Benchmark, we reviewed results with students.
- We dissected the Benchmark with students and noted any misunderstandings/ misconceptions.
- Each student would correct incorrect questions/responses.
- Each student would track their score on a Data Profile Sheet.
- Parents would have to sign Data Profile Sheet after every Benchmark.
- Teachers would ensure to spiral common misunderstandings into lessons.
- We also had one Mock test before the state assessment.
- The Mock test was a state release test.
- Teachers had to submit an Intervention Plan to the department chair after the Mock test.
- Part of the Intervention Plan was the Countdown... our targeted lessons prior to the state assessment.
This plan was very successful for us because we owned it, not the Social Studies Strategist, the Dean of Instruction, nor the Principal. It was us and we took pride in it. We knew what we had to do and we did it. Even though our classrooms have changed a lot since 2005, I believe these strategies are timeless and effective. There is no doubt that Data and Assessment are instrumental in the learning process. Bottom-line, great teachers use Data and Assessment to lead instruction!
