International Day of People with Disabilities
December 3rd is National Disability Day 2020, the theme, "Not All Disabilities Are Visible", focuses on spreading awareness and understanding of disabilities that are not immediately apparent such as mental illness and learning differences.
There are more that 1 billion people living with some form of disability and over 200 million children that have some type of disability. This can be a reminder of the importance of removing barriers for all people living with disabilities both visible and invisible.
During this time of the pandemic isolation, disconnect and disrupted routines have impacted many lives. We have ways that we can connect by cultivating student involvement that can help foster an environment where students with disabilities feel a genuine belonging with thier classmates.
Connection to other people can make a huge difference not only in our sense of belonging, but also in our physical and emotional health, in our support systems, and how we get through difficult times.
Here is a short video to feel compassion for one type of disability
