Limit Screen Time - Set limits for school assignments, gaming, and talking with friends so that your student doesn’t veer towards other online activities.
Protect Your Personal Identifiable Information - Don’t share any information that a stranger could use to find out more about you. This includes; full name, date of birth, address, and school name. Turn off your location. Double-check that your student is not using P.I.I. on games and social media.
Control Downloads and Installations - Prevent your student from potentially dangerous online environments by vetting any new apps or games.
Get Talking! - Conversations with your student can help you learn more about your student’s online lives and why it’s important to them.
Reinforce Social Awareness - Talk to your student about recognizing safe and unsafe situations and when they need to ask for help. Like in real life; we teach our kids to stay away from strangers, we need to remind them not to have private online connections with people they do not know.
Model Safe Behavior - Kids watch and learn from the adults around them. Make sure you model online safety.
Set a No-Photo Rule - For younger students, set a no-photo rule. Make it clear they are not to share a photo without an adult present. For older students, set guidelines regarding what kinds of photos they can share. Remember - protect you P.I.I.
Create a Safety Plan - Have a plan in place so that your student knows exactly what to do when someone asks for personal information or makes them feel unsafe in any way.
Create a List of Approved Online Spaces - Keep a list of websites, games, apps, and social media platforms that are approved and safe to use.
Get Online Together - Ask your student, to teach you how to play their favorite online game. Explore YouTube and TikTok. Create fun videos together.

internet safety checklist for students
There are a lot of great things to do online but remember to stay safe. Before you post anything or connect with others through games, apps, and social media, use this checklist to keep yourself safe:
I am not sharing P.I.I. like my name, address, birthday, or school name. My location is turned off.
I am not posting pictures without my parent’s approval.
My parents know my online profile and are familiar with the websites, games, and apps I am using.
I am not talking to anyone I don’t know.
How do you know when something online may be unsafe? Talk to an adult when:
If someone asks for your personally identifiable information.
If someone you don’t know wants to connect over email, private message, or video chat.
If someone asks you to send pictures.
If you see or experience bullying
If anything you see makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. Trust yourself!
