Count Down 2020-2021 Begins!
Dear SBMS Bear Families,
We begin the 2020-2021 school year tomorrow. Your SBMS staff, as with ALL SBISD staff members, have prepared thoughtfully and thoroughly for the start of this school year in the hopes that we make 2020-2021 a year of growth, exploration and enjoyment for all students. For both educators new to the field and experienced, this stands to be one of their most challenging. Please extend them grace and faith as we progress through the year.
In twenty-four years as an educator, I have worked through hurricane disasters, economic downturns and the context we find ourselves in now and educators always rise to the occasion- because it is their calling to serve. These are enormously difficult times and we will make mistakes- but we are in this together and problem solve as we need to in order to ensure we have a great year. Much has been accomplished already: approximately 450 chromebook devices and almost 1100 learning packets and planners were deployed in 7 days by staff. Instructional roadmaps, resources and lesson plans were designed by each teacher and team and instructional technology resources practiced in the hopes it all comes together for clear, differentiated instruction. In fact, SBMS is being recognized for our back to school Go Beyond in 2020 efforts at our SBISD Board Meeting tomorrow, with me serving as the representative of that work.
Please remember that all children will start virtually on August 24th. No students should report to SBMS in person tomorrow. In person learning for those who selected that model begins September 8th. It is our hope that all runs perfectly tomorrow, but we know that despite our hard work and planning that issues will arise. Much of this newsletter presents information on what to do if you encounter difficulty and you need assistance. Please try one of these resources before reaching out to staff. Do not worry if you encounter issues the first day, teachers are prepared to address issues such as these and know that tomorrow will involve a lot of work getting everyone up and running.
See you in Bear Pride Time each morning at 8:40 a.m.!
We are in this together!
Stefanie Spencer
Weren't Able to Come to the SBMS Bear Camp and Make-Up Days?
Families who were unable to come to SBMS on any of the SBMS Bear Camp and Make-Up Days may report to SBMS from 9:30-11 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 24th to pick up their chromebooks and planner packets. All visitors must wear masks, use proper social distancing measures and understand that the pick up process may involve a delay. We will be serving students and staff who picked up their devices and materials in previous days and are encountering issues. We will prioritize those families and check out materials as we are able to do so.
Just need the Learning Packet and Planner? Please go to the front doors of SBMS.
Need to check out a chromebook for your child? Please go to the door in front of the school closer to the SBMS Auditorium.
What Do We Do on the First Day of School?
School begins for all students virtually on August 24th. Uncertain what to do on day one? Do not worry- we have got you covered! See below for directions leading up to the big day and for the actual first day, too.
In Advance of August 24th:
- Establish with your child a learning space. The space should have access to an outlet in which to plug your child's device into the wall, space in which to place the chromebook and access learning materials. You may wish to consider a learning space that offers you quick visuals on whether or not they are progressing or attending to the lessons offered live or completing the work that was assigned to them to do independently.
- Gather basic instructional supplies. You may access the school supply list here, but for the first two weeks I imagine you simply need pens, pencils, journals and basic supplies.
- View your child's schedule on Skyward beginning August 17th. You may access directions for using Family Access on Skyward here.
- Record your child's schedule in his or her planner or on a marker board or other visual for his or her use during the school day.
- Log onto ItsLearning. Directions for doing so are in our Intro to How To.. here.
The Morning of August 24th:
- Review your child's schedule and log onto ItsLearning. The first class is Bear Pride Time and it begins at 8:40 a.m.
- Click on your child's Bear Pride Time class for the links to zoom and content. Follow your child's schedule and click on subsequent courses.
- Follow the Bell Schedule below.
Having Trouble on August 24th? See Below for Resources and Points of Contact
1. Review resources for logging in to the tool you are having difficulty with using this link:
2. Within the SBMS Parent Resources folder (image above and link above and to left) are several files you may find useful. To access them, click on them to open. Some will require you to download to your computer to access the hot links within them. The most helpful are:
- Ed Tech Troubleshooting Guide (Directions to ALL things distance learning)
- ItsLearning Log-In Error
- Intro to Tech How Tos
3. Many troubleshooting tips, resources for help with common issues, how-to videos and additional supports are included in the Distance Learning Toolkit.
The district technology team has spent weeks testing our network along with Zoom capabilities and feel confident that our technology is in strong, working order. However, we know issues can and do happen, sometimes beyond our control. SBISD has backup plans in place and your child’s teacher will remind you and your student(s) of what to do in the event of a technology-related issue in the weeks ahead.
Should you have WiFi issues, please be reminded that all SBISD PreK Centers and secondary campuses have property line-to-property-line district WiFi access. The district will also have WiFi-equipped buses stationed outside Woodview, Hollibrook, Spring Shadows, Ridgecrest and Spring Branch Elementary Schools. Several additional sites within the community are also being identified.
Additional technology support can also be found by contacting the SBISD Help Desk at 713.251.TECH (8324), Mon – Fri: 7am to 10pm and Sat -Sun: 9am to 10pm.
3. Contact the following individuals if you need assistance:
- Skyward Family Access Information: Yvette.Olvera@springbranchisd.com

Send Us Your SBMS Snapshots for the Yearbook, Bears!
Hi everyone! My name is Ms. Boyle and I am so excited to be the yearbook and newspaper adviser this year. Believe it or not, we are already starting work on the 2020/2021 yearbook and we are going to need your help. This year, parents, students, and teachers can upload photos directly to me through the app ImageShare. Because this year is a little different from normal, we want to see photos of your child doing anything school-appropriate that warrants inclusion in the yearbook. Here are some examples of photos that would be great to send me:
- Pictures of your child playing sports, an instrument, or partaking in other extracurricular activities. Fun hobbies, volunteering, etc.
- Pictures from family vacations taken this summer or throughout the year
- Photos that capture the spirit of this year: did your child make any masks by hand? Do you have a cool virtual learning space set up?
- Any great photo of your child. We may be able to use this photo if we end up including them in a Q&A feature.
- Kids with an unusual pet, talent, or hobby
- First day of school pics (virtual & in-person)
- The flyer specifies pic formats. Cell phone pics are great as long as they’re the right size and not blurry!
- Candids and action shots are greatly appreciated but portraits and posed/staged shots are OK as well.
If you’re wondering if you should upload, just do it! As long as the photo is school-appropriate, we will consider it for inclusion in the book. We want to create the best, most inclusive book possible so everybody’s contributions are greatly appreciated.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have. My email is sara.boyle@springbranchisd.com. Happy first week of school!
Balancing SBISD & SBMS Communication? Use the School Messenger App!
Recognizing that some of our families were not receiving communications from SBISD or SBMS, I investigated the functionality of our messaging system (School Messenger) and have found some attributes within the app that you may find helpful in multiple ways.
- Managing Your Communication Preferences: By downloading the application or viewing your account on their web-based platform, you are able to manage your communication preferences- whether you want to hear from SBISD or SBMS via email or call-outs.
- Housing Notifications in One Place: Downloading the app on your smart phone allows you to keep all emails from SBISD, SBMS and all other SBISD schools your children attend in one place. While the emails will still go to your email, you won't have to rifle through your water bill, friend emails or advertisement emails to find SBISD or SBMS emails anymore- just check out your School Messenger app.
I have sent directions for managing School Messenger preferences and using the application to all parents in Skyward AND made them available in this newsletter clicking here or reading below. IF families are not receiving my newsletter in an email named SBMS Bear Bulletin, their school messenger preferences need attention. I will not be sending notifications through both services moving forward, so families need to ensure they are receiving messages through School Messenger. The context of this year will truly require all stakeholders to stay informed and receive all school notifications. Thank you for your help on this! Please spread the word so that all families stay informed.
Directions for Managing Your Preferences for Notifications through School Messenger:
1. Please visit the following website: https://go.schoolmessenger.com/#/home or download the School Messenger app on your personal device.
2. Sign up using your email currently associated with your child’s Skyward or School Messenger notifications or log-in to School Messenger.
3. If you are creating an account with School Messenger, you will be asked to verify your email. Please do so within 24 hours.
4. Once you complete the above, you will be asked to log-in to School Messenger:
5. Once you are logged in, you will see a home screen with publications that have been sent to your account. At the top left there a toggle button that you may click on to find menu options to select from within the application.
6. Click on preferences once you observe the choices provided.
7. Scroll down and view your current preferences for receiving School Messenger messages for various departments within Spring Branch ISD. If you are not receiving the school newsletter from your child’s principal, be sure to enable the email function in the general and newsletter sections. Be sure to save your selections prior to closing.

SBMS Safety Protocols
In accordance to the LearnSBISD plan, SBMS has worked through multiple safety protocols to ensure student and staff safety as we reopen school. Please note the following protocols and discuss them with your children so that they are aware and able to adjust accordingly. We will be counting on all Bears to positively contribute to a learning environment where we can focus on teaching, learning and fun at middle school because every child and every staff member understands and adheres to the protocols.
- Masks: All students are required to wear masks throughout the entire day at SBMS. The SBMS PTA is selling Bear masks for $15 if you wish to purchase those. Otherwise, masks are to be solid in color and free from graphics. While the LearnSBISD plan allows for gaiters and students are allowed to wear them, you may wish to review recent findings that masks offer greater protection.
- Arrival: Doors open at 7:55 a.m. for students not enrolled in Zero Hour Spanish II. Those students may arrive at 7:40 a.m. and walk directly to their Spanish II classroom. More entry points will be open for students to enter the school. Students will have designated areas in which they must wait if they are not eating breakfast and once they complete it. Because our hours were adjusted, school does not start until 8:40 a.m. It is highly advisable that students do not arrive before 8:20 a.m. if they are not eating breakfast so that they are not waiting in areas around the school for class.
- Hallways: Students will be released to hallways in a staggered manner. Hallway will be single file and students need to walk on the right hand side honoring others' space.
- Hand Sanitizing Stations and Bathroom Soap Checks: Recognizing that hand washing is essential for germ protection, we will work to ensure that soap dispensers have adequate soap and are functioning properly. In addition to this, we have secured fifteen hand sanitizer dispensing stations to be placed around the building for students to use when needed.
- Advisory Lessons on Hygiene and Community Practices: We will be doing lessons during Bear Pride Time on hand washing, respiratory hygiene and practices all Bears will need to commit to this school year. They may include proper etiquette in the bathroom, use of the soap dispenser, need for social distancing around the school and what to do if they or a friend feels ill.
- Lunch: No deliveries for lunch will occur this year, so students will need to either bring a lunch or purchase one from the cafeteria. Snacks and bottled water will not be sold, so students who wish to have snacks in addition to a regular lunch need to bring those with their lunch rather rely on last year's practices of securing extra chips, etc. Lunches will be grab and go with one option at breakfast and two options at lunch. Students will be eating lunch in designated areas within the school to allow appropriate social distancing to occur. You may wish to add money to his or her lunch account in the event your child forgets to bring his or her lunch to school. Access how to do that here.
- Water Fountains: Water fountains will be utilized for refilling reusable water bottles only. Students may not drink directly from the fountains, so bringing a labeled reusable water bottle is advisable. Please label your child's water bottle and encourage them to check in with the front office if they lose theirs- it is among our most popular lost items at SBMS.
- Dismissal: Students will be released to their dismissal locations in a staggered manner and asked to walk on the right handside of the hallway to their dismissal zone.
Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up Practices at SBMS
Below are the practices for student drop off in the morning and student pick up in the afternoons. It is truly important this year, more than others, that we all adhere to these practices as each person's contribution to how our practices run will ensure success for all. While we do have two different learning models, in person and virtual, I suspect more families who have selected in person will select to drop off and pick up their children from SBMS and traffic may be busier for all. Adhering to our practices, drivers being vigilant while operating their cars and students honoring our processes will assist contribute to all of our experiences.
In either timeframe, it is an expectation that those students who are being dropped off or picked up quickly enter or exit the car and allow traffic to continue moving. Parents are asked not to park their cars and wait in the morning or afternoon in any of the locations. These areas are truly meant for a quick drop off or pick up. Please encourage your child to start gathering their belongings as you approach your stop.
There are three drop off and pick up areas for SBMS students:
1. Parent Circle: Parents may enter via Piney Point and drop off students to enter through the hallway by the shop. This is a culdesac, of sorts, so please follow the circle and proceed through this area slowly as staffing parking exists in this area, as well.
2. Band Circle: Parents may enter the Band Circle from Piney Point. Please remind your child to gather his or her things prior to your car arriving at the drop off point.
3. Front of School: Students being dropped off or picked up the front of school should utilize the services of our crossing guard if crossing the street. All drivers are asked to be vigilant in watching for students crossing and adjust their stopping location in times of traffic so that they do not stop their car in the middle of the crosswalk, forcing students to walk outside of it. Please do not motion students to cross through traffic but expect students to cross in the crosswalk. Please be reminded of the following:
- Please decrease your speed on rainy weather days.
- Please do not utilize your cell phone while traveling through a school zone.
- Please do not arrive to school before you intend to drop your child off and wait in the car. Your doing so impedes traffic and makes dropping children off difficult for others.
Please do not allow your child to walk and get picked up at local businesses along the feeder. Feeder traffic obviously moves faster than side street traffic and is not an appropriate stopping location.

Frequently Asked Questions: FAQs
In case these are helpful, these are answers to our most frequently asked questions:
1. Where is the video tour of SBMS? We decided we wanted all students to be able to view it and are displaying it during Bear Pride Time on the first day of school.
2. I wasn't able to pick up a textbook during Bear Camp? Mrs. Spencer caused an accidental "run" on textbooks. Every year, we offer this opportunity to families and few select a textbook. Most, if not all, textbooks are accessible online and teachers use that access when utilizing something from the book. Recognizing that this year is beginning with a bit of anxiety, I offered the chance to check out textbooks. More are on the way and we will let you know when they arrive. Rest assured, your child is just fine even if he or she did not secure a textbook. Not all teachers use those tools.
3. May students have lunched delivered to SBMS? No, they may not in light of COVID-19 as we are not allowed outside visitors to campus. Students will need to bring their lunch or purchase one from the Cafeteria each day. Please plan your back to school preparations accordingly- involve your student in this routine.

M. A 10 p. M.
