Sawnee Elementary School News
October 2018
A Note from Dr. Nix
Can you believe it is already October? This month will include our 50th day of school on Thursday, October 18th. We will use this day to celebrate Sawnee’s 50th anniversary with our students! We will ask all staff and students to wear red and black on the 18th and there will be a special meal offering for lunch that day. Each of our homeroom classes will incorporate the number 50 into their daily activities. We are kicking off another 50 years of excellence here at Sawnee.

Leader In Me
Sawnee Elementary is a Leader in Me school. This program is based on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind. We have been busy making plans and making goals in Guidance to learn about this habit. Please discuss and practice with your child ways to begin with the end in mind.
- First, have your child define what their “end” or a “goal” would be. Examples are: improved grades, a clean room, time to play outside, homework finished, achieving a skill in a sport, a certain toy or game they want.
- Next, have your child formulate a plan to achieve their “end in mind”. For example, if your child wants to do better in a certain school subject, have them brainstorm ways to achieve this. Examples are: doing free online tutoring from the library, practicing the skills by using the Chief Clicks on Sawnee page, making a list of questions to ask the teacher, or making flashcards to name a few.
- Create a checklist of all the steps of their plan.
- Last, plan a little celebration when the “end” or goal is achieved. Have a fun award ceremony at home!
- Bonus: you can remind your student of this whenever they tell you they have a task to do. Ask them questions like: What should this look like when it is done? What is your plan?
- Double Bonus: Let your student know what your “end” is when you ask them for help around the house.
BYOT 5K for Technology
There is still time to sign up for the BYOT 5K! This fundraiser allows the county to provide technology to all of our students (especially those who need help at home).
So your participation will be for a good cause, does not interfere with afternoon football games, and is a fun time for walking and chatting!
Use this link to sign-up with the county (10/6 at Shiloh Point Elementary School at 8:00am - $25 registration fee).
Let’s Do This!
Text and Treat - To Support Relay for Life
Come on and join us for Text N Treat at Sawnee on October 30th from 6-8pm. Your teachers will be dressed up and will love passing out candy to students in their costumes. Our hallways will be transformed into themes right out of your favorite stories and videos. The cost to enter is $5 per person, or $25 cap for families. We will have an a la carte dinner option available so that you can eat with us and join in on the fun. All proceeds will go to Relay for Life! We are asking everyone to donate bags of individually wrapped candy for this event. The class in each grade level with the most candy donations will receive a pizza party! More information will be sent out by your child’s teacher. Click the link below to view the flyer.

Reminders
Car Rider Line - The morning car rider line cuts off at 8:15am to prevent students from being tardy. Please be sure to leave home a little earlier so your child(ren) are not tardy to school. Being on time allows our teachers and students to get started with their academic day promptly. Thank you for your help with this.
Fall Picture Day - Fall picture packages will go home in student take home folders today, October 4th. As a reminder, there was no pre-ordering. Please send in your payment for the pictures you would like to keep by Thursday, October 18th. If you do not want to purchase the pictures, please send the packages back by October 18th also.
If your child missed picture day or you are not satisfied with the pictures you received, retakes will be on October 16th from 8:30am-11:30am.
