PHS SUMMER READING 2019
“Books are a uniquely portable magic.” – Stephen King
General Information
This year, teachers selected readings for students based on grade level. These readings directly connect to ideas and themes students will experience as they enter English classes in September. Students are expected to complete the reading over the summer. Teachers will unpack and assess the reading through writing prompts, discussions, and other learning experiences. Specific activities and expectations will be communicated as school begins. Click on the heading below for specific titles per grade and course level.
TIPS FOR READING
- Research and review some basic information on the book. For example, you might consider historical context, other works by the author, and even some reader reviews-- this provides a strong foundation and lets you know what to expect as you begin.
- Note characters as they are introduced, the sooner you understand who is who, the easier the story is to follow.
- Note big events or big changes that affect main characters in the book; this is usually an indication of something thematically important.
- Be able to identify the major conflicts in the book. Remember, conflicts can be between people, between a person and the natural world, between a person and society, and/or between a person and themselves.
