UPDATE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, Clark Mershon
ARE YOU READY FOR THE 2020 LEGISLATIVE SESSION
The House and Senate will convene the second regular session of the 100th General Assembly on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at the State Capitol. The session is going to be intense. The Missourian had an article on December 2 that is a prelude of things to come. We will need the voice of secondary school leadership in Missouri to be front and center. One way that you can advocate is through the MoASSP Action Center. MoASSP has partnered with NASSP using Phone 2 Action. When you click on the MoASSP Action Center link, provide the following information, and confirm subscription:
- home address
- cell number
- personal email (not school)
- You will then receive a text message from 528-86 with the following message: "Reply YES to confirm your subscription to Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals Action Center.
Updated PowerPoints from School Wellness Symposium
We have added all of the session PowerPoints to the School Wellness Symposium website. Check it out below.
Vaping Alert & Resources
If you haven't sent the vaping alert message to your members of Congress, please do so. It is easy to send a powerful message regarding the vaping epidemic in our schools. "Clear the Air--Stop the Vape Missouri" is a new campaign just released. I have included a link below with helpful resources.
Building Expenditures Release Date is December 12
We have been talking for a while about the new federal mandate, Per Pupil Expenditure (PPE), and resources to help principals navigate through this change. In case you missed it, I have included links below, as well as DESE's PowerPoint presented during the state board meeting this week.
Classification of Districts Finalized
I have provided another DESE document outlining a presentation shared this week at the board meeting regarding the designation of Missouri's 518 school districts. The information has APR for 2017 and 2018, as well as the percentages of fund balances for each school district. There is an interesting article from St. Louis Public Radio included below the DESE document.
Missouri Leadership Development System (MLDS) Covers the Map
MLDS continues to increase with the number of principals involved in the program. Check out the heat map below as well as Dr. Jim Master's article, "Transformational Learning – Moving Beyond Competence."
Courage2Report Tip Hotline
Take a look at the latest tip hotline resource that is FREE to all schools in Missouri. The hotline should be a welcome resource, particularly for schools that do not already have a current system in place. Even if Courage2Report is not chosen by schools as the preferred method of reporting concerning behavior and threats to school safety, it is vitally important to educate students and staff of those things to report and how to report them. The website provides excellent information.
Whether you are aspiring, emerging, developing, or transformational, wherever you are on the “Principal’s Journey," it is a “matter of principal(ple).” Clark Mershon

URGE YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO SUPPORT VAPING LEGISLATION...CLICK LINK BELOW. IT IS QUICK & EASY.
Dear Missouri School Leader,
We are asking our MoASSP members and educational colleagues around the state to take action on the vaping/youth tobacco crisis in schools. S. 1832 and H.R. 2339 are gaining momentum in both chambers of Congress right now, and the voice of school leaders can help move the needle on these critical bills in a big way. The bipartisan legislation would address the nationwide vaping epidemic in schools. Principals and educators can make a difference right now by sending a message to their members of Congress and urging them to support S. 1832, the Smoke-Free Schools Act, and H.R. 2339, the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act.

ABOUT COURAGE2REPORT MISSOURI
The Missouri School Violence Hotline (SVH) began in October of 2001. In 2019, through the Missouri School Safety Initiative, the reporting mechanism moved to the Missouri Information Analysis Center for 24/7 operation and was named Courage2ReportMO. The goal is to make schools safer by helping school districts and law enforcement learn about school violence as soon as possible. Courage2ReportMO takes CONFIDENTIAL reports involving any public or private school in Missouri with students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Courage2Report Website
