What does Amendment 1 state?
Freedom of Speech
The 1st Amendment says that you have the freedom of speech. Libel and slander is a part of defamation. Libel is the writing of people, and slander is speaking about someone or something. They came up with this amendment because the framers did not want anything like a British monarchy. If you would speech out and say your opinion, you would probably be sent to get feathered and tarred. They wanted freedom, and at the same time control. Because of this, they made the rule of freedom of speech. In Virginia, at Harrisonburg School the superintendent made a decision to ban a display about banned books. It is like he is saying that they do not only ban books, but that it is also necessary to ban discussion about the books and about them being banned. I think that people have lot of freedom of speech, but in some cases, people have too much freed because it is not stated very clearly in the constitution. I think they should make another amendment clarifying what it means.
