February 27, 2023
No School on Monday, February 27th
Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 28th with the start of the third trimester.
Disabilities Awareness Week
SMS is celebrating Disabilities Awareness this week. Each day we will focus on an aspect of respect, inclusion, awareness, and support for individuals with disabilities. We will also be raising money for a memorial scholarship fund for graduating seniors who plan to go into a career that helps people with disabilities. This scholarship fund is in memory of Andre Cozart, a former student of SMS.
Tuesday: DisABILITIES - celebrate our abilities, what makes all of us different. Wear stripes today - Andre loved stripes! A video introducing Andre can be found here.
Wednesday: Invisible Disabilities - not all disabilities can be seen, so you can’t tell a person’s abilities by their appearance. Wear white, the color for invisible disabilities.
Thursday: Respect - we’re all human, we all deserve to be treated with respect. Today’s challenge: treat everyone you come across with today with the same respect you want to be treated with.
Friday: HAT DAY - Andre loved wearing hats! Donate at least $1 before school to the Love Like Andre scholarship fund and get to wear a hat for the day. Donations of any amount are gladly accepted! The team to raise the most money will receive a special treat!
Get involved - learn how to include all people regardless of abilities, and embrace our diversity.
**6th grade will also welcome guest speakers in the afternoon on March 3rd to share their experiences.

Student Handbook Update
The Scottsburg MS student handbook contains some significant updates for the 2022-2023 school year. The most significant changes took place in the discipline section.
Here are the highlights of three changes that will impact the largest number of students:
Cell phones are still not allowed to be used during the school day here at SMS. Phones are expected to be turned off and stored in lockers. Students who are carrying a cell phone or using a cell phone during the school day are in violation. The consequences for each situation are outlined in the handbook.
Second is illegal substances. This year students who have illegal substances and/or paraphernalia (most common examples are vapes, cigarettes, or alcohol) will be recommended for expulsion on the first offense.
In an attempt to be more aligned with the high school discipline policy, we will be following a progressive discipline approach. This means that when a student commits the same offense multiple times, the discipline will get progressively more serious. Each example is outlined in the doc that is provided by clicking on the picture above or via the link below.
SMS Student Handbook
We encourage you to read the handbook with your child(ren) and to contact us with any questions you may have.
We are looking forward to working with our students and their parents throughout the upcoming school year.
