The Greeks advanced technology just for you so that we still use it today. For example they made a form of calculus and we still use calculus in the USA. They made a school with kids making mathematical theories to help kids learn better. In schools we need to thing of theories sometimes. A very important and special one is they made a new and improved methods of geometry. In math we had a whole unit of geometry. Finally they had the first woman to earn fame as a mathematician, Hypatia. That is definitely still happening because it still happens today. Which one do you want go to in Athens because I know your coming and you haven't even read the whole article.

The Greeks had many thoughts like they thought earth was made of atoms. We still think that today. Also we must give immense credit for the pattern of thought that they introduced, the concept that things could be understood in terms of underlying causes and that these explanations could be tested to see if they were correct. These principles define the scientific method, as we still practice it. Their new method of thought has proven very powerful in making progress in our understanding of nature. Also they had one of the first doctors named Hippocrates. If you want any of that well come to Athens because has it all! We know today that earth was made of atoms but they started thinking it.

The Greeks made some amazing things like the Acropolis. The Acropolis is a hill with a bunch of temples. One of the most spectacular achievements in Athens during this time was the rebuilding of the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to Athena on the Acropolis. Pheidias, a friend of Pericles, created a new statue of Athena, sculpted in ivory and gold, on the Acropolis. The Parthenon, a temple that housed the Athena statue, was built to replace the temple destroyed by the Persians. Pericles used Delian League treasury money for this building project. The huge statue of Athena got stolen by the Romans. Athens had a fleet of over 200 warships. No polis had ever possessed a navy as large as the Athenian navy. It was the Athenians who contributed most of the Greek warships at the Battle of Salamis. Think about building 200 ships with nails, a hammer and a saw! They also made stone walls around their city. Some of the Greeks architecture was used to make the White House! So come to Greece to see this amazing and beautiful artwork. Just think that some of the buildings were made 2,000 years ago!

There were competitions in music, poetry, and drama but that is just boring. If you want real competition then come to Athens! Some of the most important festivals of ancient Greece involved athletic competition, such as the Olympic Games, which were held in honour of Zeus, and the Pythian Games, held at Delphi in honour of Apollo. Athens was one of the first places to compete on the Olympic Games. So root for Athens! Some of the Olympic Games events are pentathlon: these are discus, javelin, jumping, running and wrestling. The Olympic Games have some dangerous events like long-distance race, called the dolichos. There are no lanes for running and a sharp turn at either end, and the athletes push and jostle and even deliberately trip each other. Another one is just one length of the stadium, about 192 metres. This event brings more glory to the winner than all the other Olympic sports: if you win, the Games will be named after you, so preserving your name for history. The last one is meant for if you are at war and you run fast because the race in armour. So the Athenians are in some tough sports. Greece was the birthplace of the Olympics! Yes the famous one.

Theater flourished as Aeschylus, Euripides, and Sophocles wrote tragedies, while Aristophanes wrote comedies. You want to listen to some good theater just come to Greece. Greek plays were performed during religious ceremonies held in honor of Dionysus, the Greek god of Wine and Revelry so if you go there will probably going to be a lot of wine! The world has great tragedies and comedies today.

The Greeks believed in a lot things like democracy, democracy in Athens was refined under the leadership of Pericles. Do you want to see statues of the father of philosophy? Then come to Athens. There are beliefs in Greek gods so if you want to see statues or religious people you know where to go. If you see great temples, statues, sanctuaries, festivals, processions, and sports for their gods? Then my goodness come to Athens already! The USA has a democracy too.
