Collin County Youth Leadership Council
Collin County Judge Chris Hill is accepting applications for the 2019/2020 Collin County Youth Leadership Council. The leadership program offers high school students in Collin County a unique opportunity to develop leadership skills, learn about county government, discuss local policy issues, and interact with their elected officials about local government and issues facing their community.
“Collin County students are among the best and the brightest in Texas,” said Hill. “I look forward to meeting with these students and gathering their ideas to make Collin County even stronger.”
The Collin County Youth Leadership Council program is open to high school students enrolled in grades 9-12 in a public, private, or home school in Collin County. Students selected for the program will have the opportunity to tour and visit with elected officials at the county jail, courthouse, and administration building, as well as the State Capitol in Austin.
Students interested in the 2019/2020 Collin County Youth Leadership Council should submit a completed application, which includes a short essay and a letter of recommendation, by Wednesday, September 11. The first council meeting is Saturday, September 28. The application is available online at www.chrishill.us/youth_leadership_council.pdf. For more information, please contact Hilari Monk at hmonk@co.collin.tx.us, or (972) 548-4632.

4th Years
This week in Government 4th Year learners created study guides on one of four Enlightenment Thinkers: Issac Newton, John Locke, Charles de Montesquieu, and Jean Jaques Rousseau. Computer Science focused on basic input/output (programming). While in Math, Pre-Cal learners continued work on transformations and parent functions. Calculus spent time working on limits and derivatives. In English, learners wrapped up their analysis of author's purpose and began reading their Book Club selections. Finally, learners continued their research in SRD. They should be completing three more annotated bibliographies by Monday.

3rd Year Parents:
It is a focused, busy week as we are preparing for the Open House on September 16th where we will have proof prints of the various Newspapers available for viewing and feedback by those who attend. The learners are coming to terms with a project deliverable where there is no oral presentation to explain their methodology behind the work; the deliverable will stand alone and speak for itself. Learners are focused on the overall Newspaper completion but also on their individual team roles. Art and Layout Designers are focused on combining articles and visuals into well organized layouts, Copy Editors are focusing on fine tuning the quality and grammatical structure of the articles, and the Editors are double and triple checking that each page of the paper is complete and contributing to the overall Newspaper. The work is hard, but it will be worth it. We hope to see all of you soon.
Thank you,
Your 3rd Year Facilitators
2nd Years
One week before True Grit presentations, and learners are pushing to collect their final data and attempt to meet their Health and Wellness and Consumption goals. True Grit has been a great success this year as more learners than ever are on track to meet at least one of their goals. Presentations will take place next week on Thursday and Friday.
Logos, Pathos, and Ethos--oh my! Learners dove into the world of logic and rhetoric this week, as they investigated these concepts and demonstrated their knowledge through Daytime Emmy-award worthy skits. Learners spent some time in the lab this week, investigating and gathering data on surface area and solubility. Learners will need to draw upon this knowledge in our next project, Beneath the Surface, when they apply these concepts to buoyancy and submersible builds. Mathematically speaking, learners analyzed Wildlife Conservation Data to use data to create graphs and models for regression.
1st Years
Geography: We have just finished up our analysis of conflict through the lens of the Korean Conflict. This week will be focusing on economic systems by reading Animal Farm.
Engineering/Technology: This week in Engineering and Technology, we explored the importance of empathy and the impact of our words when posting and sharing online and are creating a Public Service Announcement (PSA) to raise awareness and help share strategies on how to deal with thorny situations.
Art: This week, learners have worked on the values portion of the still life, submitting a progress check late in the week. Next week, projects are due for review.
Math: This week, we learned about how functions look in different representations and how to evaluate problems using function notation.
Physics:Physics learners got a chance to see what being a teacher is like this week! They made their own review materials, from the perspective of a facilitator and were very successful. We might have some future educators in our midst! Learners also began a short group project where they were practicing gathering, organizing, graphing and analyzing data. They gathered their own data to manipulate based on the culture here and the results were very interesting!
English: We have been learning how to write about themes and will continue to do so this week as well. We will also be using Animal Farm to discover theme as well.
