Johann Gutenberg

Born 1398 - Died February 3, 1468

He was born in Mainz, Germany. Very little is known about his childhood. He moved around lots. He worked as a blacksmith as a young man. But, eventually he had enough and created what he is best known for, the Gutenberg Printing Press.

The Gutenberg Printing Press and Gutenberg Bible

Gutenberg created a printing press that printed using moving type. It is a process in which you line all the letters up in a metal rack style of object and punch them down onto the page with ink on the tips. After each punch the letters had to be remade. It allowed mass production to happen. The Gutenberg Bible was the first bible printed. It was called the 42 line bible because Gutenberg's press printed pages of 42 lines.
