Halloween Festivities
Minnesota Zoo Animals After Dark: ZzzZoo Overnight Field Trip!
Thursday, November 8th
8:00 A.M. - Leave Hendricks
11:00 - Eat sack lunch on the bus.
12:00 P.M. - Approximate arrival at zoo. Stow sleeping bags, etc.
12:30-4:00 - Walk around zoo as a class. Do zoo presentations in our group.
4:30 - Official welcome and greeting from zoo staff.
5:00 - Tropics Tank Dive Show: Walk through the Tropics Trail to meet an aquarist and enjoy a tropical dive show. Learn more about their aquatic collection and their behavior and care, as well as ocean habitats and conservation, with time for specific questions from the group. Parent/chaperone meeting with instructor during the dive show.
6:10 - Dinner
6:45 - Activities in Discovery Bay: Behind-the-scenes tours, learning more about animal care, management, and behavior. Special thematic, educational activities specific to our grade level: dive deeper into issues of conservation and ecology.
8:30 - Snack & Break
8:45 - Behind-the-Scenes Tour & Scavenger Hunt: Behind-the-scenes tour of the Tropics.Minnesota trails kitchen. Interactive, grade-appropriate scavenger hunt focused on conservation issues. Free time in Discovery Bay to further explore the tidepool, estuary, and other exhibits.
9:30/9:45 - Bedtime Rules and Set-Up: Discuss night time rules and expectations. Time to set up beds, use the bathroom, and have some free time as a group.
10:30 - Lights Out! Goodnight!
Friday, November 9th
6:30 A.M. - Wake up and clean up. All stuff packed up and moved out of Discovery Bay.
7:15 - Breakfast
7:45 - T-Shirts and Conclusion. Review the major themes we learned about the previous evening.
8:00 - Leave the zoo.
11:00 - Stop to eat lunch. Kids can choose between Subway and McDonald’s for lunch. Lunch will be provided using our class money. No money is needed!
1:00 - Arrive back in Hendricks. Please let me know if your child is unable to be picked up. I will try to arrange transportation if possible.
Recommended items to bring:
Sleeping bag and pillow
Sleeping mat or small air mattress (if you don’t have one, the Zoo will also provide these!!!)
Camera (optional)
Toiletry items (toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, etc)
Sleeping clothes
Slippers or flip-flops to put on if you need to go to the bathroom in the night
Clothes for the next day
Sack lunch for the way up on Thursday (please let Mrs. Jordahl know by Monday, November 5th if you want a sack lunch provided from the school)
Please leave at home:
Flashlights
Electronic items
Gum
Books, games, cards, etc for the night (lights will go out and it will be dark) **Students can bring these items for the busride, but they will be expected to be left on the bus. The school is not responsible for lost/stolen items!
Extra food to eat that night (food brought in your sack lunch will stay on the bus during the visit to the zoo)
