Van Brunt Elementary
September, 2016
Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year!
Welcome back to our returning families and a special welcome to our many new families! We are very excited for the school year and are seeing many great things from our students and staff. Open house was very well attended and students seemed to enjoy meeting their new teacher and organizing their classroom supplies. If you visited the cafeteria, you saw many wonderful opportunities for your children. We appreciate the extra time given by parents and staff to organize these events.
Teachers are taking time to get to know their students and help students adjust to the routine of being back to school! Students are welcoming new friends and catching up on fun had over the summer.
We are looking forward to another great year! As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Lisa Sawyer

Drop Off/Pick Up
For the safety of our students, please note the following drop off reminders:
Please only drop off your child by the curb. We have had several families drop off in the middle of the road and have students run across the street. Please pull off to the side of the road and have your child exit on the curb side of the road. This will also prevent traffic back-ups.
We have crossing guards on Cedar Street and Mill Street starting at 7:45 am. Please have students walk on the sidewalk and cross the street with a crossing guard.
If you are dropping off directly to the playground, please have your child exit at the curb on the side of the playground so they can walk on the sidewalk to the playground without crossing the road. You can also pull into the parking lot and drop your child off at the playground.
Thank you so much for your cooperation and helping us keep all students safe. We will continue to take a look at how we can improve drop off procedures.
Thank you!

Healthy Eating
Our 4K and Kindergarten students experienced a hands on nutrition lesson from Chef Irene. Students learned about healthy hand washing procedures before handing food and all about sweet corn! They learned how to husk corn as well as nutrition facts about sweet corn. Hot lunch students were able to try the sweet corn during lunch. All students enjoyed the experience!
According to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction: "Nutrition education and the promotion of healthy eating behaviors and lifestyles are essential to students' health, well being, and educational success. Healthy, well-nourished students are better able to reach their full academic and physical potential, are absent less often, and have higher test scores. Through education, Wisconsin students can become empowered to choose healthy lifestyle behaviors to help them excel in all their endeavors."
At Van Brunt, we would like to encourage our students to bring healthy snacks and lunches to school. This is the time to refuel our bodies and brains.
Some ideas include:
- Fresh/dried fruit and vegetables
- Whole grain crackers
- Rice cakes
- Popcorn (air popped)
- Granola or cereal bars
- Yogurt
- Cheese
- Nuts (please check with your child's teacher before bringing nuts)
- Trail mix
- 100% fruit juice
Please avoid sending soda with your child. When students drink soda during the school day, healthy foods are often displaced from their diet. If there is a special event in your child's classroom, and soda is allowed, your child's teacher will send a note.
