Calling All East Parents!!!! Our Students Need You!
East Parents,
As I've said in past newsletters parent involvement is crucial for the support and success of our school. FTMS East is comprised of 1258 students who come from many different backgrounds. However, the one thing they all have in common is a parent or parents who love and care for their success. With the potential of 2516 parents connected to our students it amazing to consider the potential of how our families can impact and support the students and teachers at East. If every parent donated just one hour of volunteer time per school year our school would have nearly 318 extra school days of support for our students. Imagine what 318 extra days could do for the success of our student at East.
With that being said an important event is coming up on May 1st. The Franklin Township Middle School East PTC is holding open elections for board members for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. These roles are crucial to the support and improvement of our school. Additionally, it is my intentions to work closely with the PTC and their board on all things relating to the improvement of the programs and procedures at East. Parents who are involved and committed to the PTC will have insight and involvement as we continue our path to becoming the greatest middle school in the state of Indiana. If you have the desire to help make an impact with our students, teachers and the FC community please join us!
Board elections are on Tuesday, May 1 at 7 in the FTMS East library.
Respectfully,
Matt Vandermark Carrie Brewer-Thomas
East Principal East PTC Co-President

8th Grade End of Year Social
Unbelievable to think that the 2017-2018 school year is almost over! That means that the 8th grade Social is right around the corner. The 8th grade Social will take place on the last day of school, Wednesday, May 23rd from 11:50AM-1:40PM here at Middle School East. Students will enjoy a picnic outside (hot dogs, chips, ice cream, and lemonade), a DJ with music, socialization with friends, time to sign yearbooks, and activities ranging from cornhole to kickball matches! This is a time to celebrate our 8th graders and thank them for being safe, responsible, and respectful here at Middle School East. If you have any questions about the Social please contact Mr. Smith via e-mail robert.smith@ftcsc.k12.in.,us or by phone 317-803-8102.

FTMS East Library Media Center News:
As the end of the school year approaches, the media center must collect all outstanding materials and/or fines to begin inventory. If a “lost” item is returned to the media center, the fine will change according to our policy. Fines are $0.05 per day per item. I will calculate the new fine amount and send a receipt home if the item is returned. There will be no more than $5 charged for an overdue (books that have been returned).
Since it is near the end of the year, your child’s fine will transfer to the next school year. Your child will have their account “restricted” until the fine is resolved. We strive to provide literature and resources for students’ research projects, book reports, and leisurely reading. It is my hope that each student can be responsible for the items they checkout. We discuss this topic at length throughout the year.
Library fines can be paid by cash or check. Checks can be made payable FTMS East. If you have any questions, please email or call the Library Media Center during school hours at 317-803-8170.

2018 8th Grade Semi-Formal
Student Council is hosting an 8th grade Semi-Formal Masquerade Ball on Friday, May 18th from 6:00-8:00PM. Tickets may be purchased during 8th grade lunch, May 15th-18th for $3. Please be aware that any student earning a referral May 15th-May 18th will not be permitted to the dance. At the door students will be given a mask per the Masquerade Ball theme, but students can feel free to purchase or design their own masks. Awards will be given to the most original masks. Also, those in attendance will be allowed to pick up their yearbooks early, and have them signed at an autograph booth at the dance.
There will be a modified dress code for the dance that evening. All dresses must meet the fingertip rule. The student's dress must come to the student's finger tips when the student has their arms down to their side. All dresses must also have straps that are two finger wide width. A sweater or shawl must be used to cover the students’ shoulders if this rule is not met. No clothing revealing bare midriffs will be allowed. All shirts must be able to be tucked in. Clothing which reveals undergarments, is studded, has spikes, or chained are all prohibited. Hats may be worn at the dance. All other dress code expectations will remain the same as outlined in our student handbook. All students will be checked for compliance to the dress code prior to entering the dance per school staff. Violations will not be permitted inside the event. If you have any questions about the dress code for the dance, please direct those questions to Assistant Principal, Mr. Smith, robert.smith@ftcsc.k12.in.us.
If you are parent looking to volunteer for the Semi-Formal please again contact Mr. Smith so he can put you on the volunteer list. Again, mark your calendar for Friday, May 18th. Be sure to come join other Flashes and
take selfies with peers at the photo booth or just chill with friends. It will be a great night and YOU don’t want to miss it!
