The First Days of School FAQ's:
- Kindergarten students are learning to buckle their own seatbelt (parents, please start that training as soon as you can).
- There are more car riders than normal. Fewer students use bus transportation at the beginning of the school year. Please consider bus transportation for your child. Call Mrs. Slagle at 628-2732 for more information about the bus routes.
- Staff are still learning children's names.
- We want to ensure that we are putting the right child in the right car. Not all parents have a car sign on the first few days of school. We will get these to you as quickly as possible. You must have a car tag no later than Tuesday, September 6.
Can I walk my child to class?
- Yes, you may walk your child to class through Friday, September 9. After that, parents will be asked to use the car rider line every morning or use our bus transportation system.
- After September 9, visitors will only be allowed to the classroom for scheduled appointments and other reasons as approved by administration. All visitors must sign in after 7:00 am after September 9.
- All policies regarding parents walking students to class are made to maintain a safe and orderly school environment. Rest assured, there are many staff and students here to help your child get to class each morning if needed.
What time does my child have to be in class?
- The tardy bell rings every morning at 7:55 am. Students must be in their classroom no later than 7:55 or they are counted tardy. Teachers prefer students be in the classroom shortly after 7:30 each morning, especially if they are eating breakfast at school. This helps the child have a calm and organized start to the day.
- This year, breakfast will be served in the classroom beginning at 7:30. All children are eligible for FREE breakfast everyday.
How early can I drop my child off at school?
- Children can be dropped off in the car line beginning at 7:15am. They will wait in the cafeteria until the bell rings at 7:30. At this time, they will be dismissed to class.
What time does school dismiss?
- School dismisses each day at 2:25 for first load bus riders. Second load bus riders will be supervised by grade level teachers. The bell for car riders and after school rings at 2:30. The car rider line starts moving around 2:35 each day.
How does the car rider line work?
- The line is a serpentine pattern from the back of the front parking lot to the front sidewalk. The first car in line must wait behind the saw horse until a staff member directs them to pull forward. This keeps our fire lane open until it is time to load students. The line often flows onto Highway 74. It is much less stressful to enter the line in the afternoon from the direction of KD's. Turning left in front of Food Lion can often be a stressful experience.
- Children who are picked up by car will be waiting in the cafeteria until their name is called over the intercom. Once called, the child will proceed to the front of the school under the awning where they will wait until their car stops at a designated space. A staff member or 5th grade ambassador will then safely load the student in the car. Children are allowed to read a book in the cafeteria while waiting for their name to be called, but they are not allowed to do other homework during this time.
How can I make the car rider line flow more smoothly?
- Use a clothes hanger to hang your sign from the rear view mirror.
- Have your sign with you every day after the first week of school. Starting September 6, ALL cars must have a car rider sign displayed. If not, you will be asked to come into the building and show an ID in order to pick up your child. This is part of our safe schools policy and it will be strictly enforced.
- Load your children on the sidewalk side of the car.
- Teach your child to buckle his or her own seatbelt.
