What is Rap

Rap is a mix of rhythm and beats, instead of singing, rappers just speak the words to the rhythm of the song. There is much passion, and truth in Rap music, so much it spoke to the entire world. Hip-hop or Rap is generations that refused to be silenced by urban poverty. When they rapped about it, it touched many people. Although many rappers rap about money, women, sex, drugs, and violence, a lot of them rap about hardship and how they got to the top. Rap went through many changes on its way to become Mainstream.

History of Rap

Atom states, “Based on historical accounts, rap can be traced back all the way to the time of the griots, who were groups of people from West Africa that delivered stories accompanied by sparse instrumentation and rhythmic drumbeats.”(1) Rap really started to become renown in New York in the 1970s, because they were credited with developing the first official rap songs. The most famous sub-category of Rap known as gangsta rap, was colonized by some famous figures like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and notorious BIG.(1) Marjorie.

Violence and Rap music

Rap music gets blamed a lot for violence in gangs and violence in general. It is true though. Rap music has a lot to do with violence. One of the most famous forms of violence is gang violence. Gang violence has been around for way longer than rap music has, but rap music still has influenced it. There have been many rappers lost to things they said in their songs. Sfcrific states, “Gang violence in hip hop escalated in the 90s and ultimately lead to the tragic death of hip hop's two most respected artists, Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur.”(1)
