Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 1/23 - 1/27/17
On our way to February!
Fundations:
We finished Unit 8 this week and began Unit 9. Our focus will be on the r-controlled vowels of -er/ir/ur. They can be so tricky in our spelling because all three make the same sound. That's when we spell with our eyes! As we are about halfway through our school year, this is a good time for a refresher on the handout that is sent home to families at the beginning of each unit. It starts with a "Dear Family" letter which is an overview of the unit's concepts and also includes some book choices for the children's reading. The next page is an important one. It is called the "Homework Guide" and it breaks down a homework plan for each school day of the unit of study. It contains the words that will be on the unit assessment as well as practice for the sentence dictation portion of every unit test. There's even a practice sheet for recording answers. Finally, this packet also includes the "trick words" for study. These words can't be sounded out so they must be practiced. The packet for Unit 9 was sent home yesterday. Please check your child's blue folder for this important resource.
Literacy:
This week we have been trying to figure out the meaning of poems. We compared two Winter Poems. We figured out some unfamiliar words in poems and we even used some strategies to figure out words we didn't know in a rhyming poem. We found out that some poems are easy to figure out and some are very tricky!
Math:
We continued our work with missing addends and learned how to solve for bigger problems like 28+___=56 with an open number line. It was a new strategy that most of us didn't know. We are becoming masters of the REWIND AND REVERSE strategy for story problems with missing information. Learning this strategy meets standard 2.OA.1 - I can solve word problems with unknown numbers in different positions. This is one of our Common Core Standards for Operations and Algebraic Thinking.
Writing Workshop:
We are poets in Room 1! We are learning all about alliteration, repetition, and onomatopoeia to make our poems better! Second Graders were encouraged to put a poem in their pocket and share it with someone at home. Hopefully, it wasn't found in the laundry! :-)
Blackhawks Reading Ceremony:
2nd grade celebrated the top readers for December! If your child turned in their December Reading Log - then they were recognized in our ceremony! Our very own Kevin Hebreard won 2 Blackhawks tickets. He was chosen by the Blackhawks organization as one of the TOP FIVE readers in their entire Reading Program...quite an achievement! Kevin read over 6,000 pages during the month of December! Our Blackhawks Party and Kevin have inspired all our second graders. Here at school, they have really been serious about logging their "pages read." Hope they're doing the same at home! Our goal is to win the Blackhawks Class Party at the end of March by having the most pages read in total. If we do, we get a visit from Tommy Blackhawk AND a Blackhawks player! C'mon...let's read!!
