Principal's Message
Aloha Hickam Families,
Happy New Year, Falcons! We hope you had a relaxing holiday break spent with family and friends. We are excited for the 3rd quarter to begin. As a reminder, students will return on Wednesday, January 4th.
Listed below are some important reminders as we start the new year. If you have the time in your busy schedule, I would like to invite you to our School Community Council Meeting that will be held on Monday, January 23rd from 1-2 in the L&L, next to the Aloha Transition Center. We hope to see you there!
Thanks again for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Patrick Wetzel

Morning Drop Off and Afterschool Pickup Procedures
Morning Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
Student Drop-Off:
- Student drop-off begins at 7:40 a.m. This rule is for their safety, as staff members are only required to be on duty at this time. The only exception is for students purchasing school breakfast from the cafeteria. Meal service begins at 7:10 a.m. and ends at 7:40 a.m.
- Drop-off for all students is located on the curbside of Manzelman Circle, fronting the walkway that leads to the cafeteria. Students in the first five vehicles can exit their vehicles on the curbside. Students should exit the car on the curbside, not the roadside.
- We humbly ask for your assistance in not dropping off students on Julian Way, where the Child Development Center is located, and Radio Road on Julian Avenue due to the immense foot and bike traffic in these areas.
- The bus stop is located on Julian Avenue near the portable classrooms. There is no school bus service since students live within one mile of the school. “Curb-to-curb” transportation (for DOE students) must be a Related Service listed on the IEP or 504 Plan.
- Always use the crosswalks. Crosswalk safety is of utmost importance for school-aged children. Bicyclists shall follow JBPHH regulations, which include walking bicycles across streets. Observe the crossing guards and follow their directions. Refrain from speeding past or reversing to avoid them, even if you are in a hurry. There have been a few instances where we almost had an accident because people crossed from Julian Ave to the Manzelman Circle parking lot. Your assistance with this matter is deeply appreciated.
- Observe the Falcon Safety Patrol Officers (FSPO). Our FSPO provides traffic safety assistance for students traveling to and from school. Observe the 15 MPH speed zone during arrival and dismissal times as indicated by the street signs. Right turns onto Julian Avenue are prohibited from 7:30 am-8:00 am. The parking area within the Freedom Tower lot is for Hickam Elementary staff, with visitor spots available in the front. When others are parked in the lot, that can make it difficult for teachers to find parking elsewhere and get to their classrooms on time. You may park along 8th and 9th Street.
- Stay out of the drop area located on Manzelman Circle.
Student Pickup:
- Begins after school dismissal at 1:10 pm on Wednesdays and 2:10pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. If your child (ren) is not present while picking them up at the circle, we kindly ask you to circle around and try again. There is no parking or waiting as this will delay traffic.
Rainy Day Dismissal:
- Students will be dismissed from the school’s Cafeteria whenever there is a storm with thunder/lightning.
WASC Accreditation Visit
- The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) will conduct our accreditation visit from February 27th through March 3rd.
- Accreditation is a school improvement process, HES evaluates itself on five domains: Organization, Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment, School Culture and Student Support.
- As a school, we determine our school's strengths and growth areas. A few of these growth areas will become our school recommendations and help shape our school for the next six years.
- As a result of the WASC accreditation visit, we will end school early this week, with our dismissal time ending at 1:10 (Wednesday bell schedule for the entire week).

Anchored 4 Life Tip and Quote of the Month!
"Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do" - John Wooden
Our Anchored4Life club defines resiliency as the ability to bounce back from setbacks. A setback is a roadblock that students navigate around to meet their goals. Please take a painted resiliency rock from the A4L garden or leave a rock to help encourage other students!
Tip: If you are new to our school, you will probably learn some new terminology. One of those is Wheel. Twice a month on a "Wheel" day, students rotate through all our specialist classes, PE, Music, Media Literacy/Social Emotional Learning, and Technology like a rotating wheel.
AVID
Aloha Parents,
I know that we’ve all experienced this before, you ask your child, “how was your day?” and the classic answer is “good”. Well, to help you with this, let’s learn an AVID strategy that is being used in our school called DLIQ. DLIQ stands for “what I Did”, “what I Learned”, “one thing that I found Interesting”, and “one Question that I have”. This reflective practice at the end of the day or end of a unit of study not only helps the student to reflect on his/her learning but also serves as powerful feedback for the teacher (or parent). So the next time you get the “good” answer, ask your child to elaborate on their day using DLIQ!

Choose Love
Hickam Elementary School's Social Emotional Learning program is called Choose Love. This quarter we are focusing on Forgiveness. “Forgiveness means choosing to let go of anger and resentment toward yourself or someone else, to surrender thoughts of revenge, and to move forward with your personal power intact.” -Choose Love Movement
After-School Club Spotlight - HES Chorus
The HES Chorus Club has been working diligently this year to prepare for their school production of Disney's Frozen Kids! This year they will be able to perform again at the Moanalua High School's Performing Arts Center on Feb 4-5th. These students have learned so much in this club, from auditions to dress rehearsals. They would love for our whole Hickam Ohana to come to their performance!
