Updates from our Principal

Good afternoon Firebird Nation,

Yeah! It’s Spring Break and St. Patrick’s Day. What an end to a week.

This week students worked hard with teachers to tie up loose ends before spring break. In some classes, students were actively working on finishing learning plans. In other classes, students were completing evidence of learning assessments or assignments for learning plans.

In some of our performing arts classes they were finishing performances or reflecting on completed performance. Overall, it was a busy week in every classroom across the building. Wednesday night was our 5th Grade Orientation for parents and incoming 6th grade students. What an exciting time! Mr. Smart set the tone of the evening by having our drum line play for students and families as they entered the cafeteria. We had a packed house who started in the cafetorium listening to some general information about Falcon Middle School as well as what we currently know will happen when BRES/FMS 6th grade wing opens. Then, students and families moved to the gym. Students and parents were able to meet a variety of teachers, club sponsors, coaches, transportation, PTSA, etc. We had a lot to offer to begin to prepare our new Firebirds. Thank you to every staff member, teacher, parent volunteer, and student who participated in 5th Grade Orientation making it a huge success. I know I am incredibly excited to get to know our new 6th grade class.

After spring break, students will begin CMAS testing. As stated in the prior newsletter, state testing is a wonderful gauge to see where students currently are in math, reading, writing, as well as science for 8th grade. This also helps our teachers at FMS to better plan for instruction. CMAS is also one way students can show a demonstration of mastery that is now required as a part of Colorado Graduation Requirements for High School. Student performance on these tests now can also help students advance more quickly through their high school work and look at free college classes, internship opportunities, and work force credentials in high school sooner. The more time and effort students take on these exams help to guide them in the future.

Finally, Spring Break is here. I hope that each and every student and family have a time to rest and rejuvenate. If you are traveling, safe travels to all. If you are staying here, I hope our weather works with us some to be able to enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Whatever you choose do, I wish you well and look forward to seeing our students in 2 weeks. Then the count down to the end of the school year begins!

Have a great weekend and Happy Spring Break to all,

Mrs. Elena Forehand

Personalized learning is more challenging in a class like Physical Education. In PE, the focus is often on team sports, learning the rules of a game, and using a variety of equipment, so the class doesn't often lend itself to individualized learning. However, our PE teachers, Harrison Sundgren and Robin Morris, have found a way to personalize PE for students by having them set personal fitness goals. Each Friday, students complete a pacer test or a plank test. The focus is on individual improvement rather than competition. Students set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) goals for their fitness, and they work to improve week after week. Check out the video below to see students complete their final pacer test of the quarter and reflect on their goals. Personalized learning at work!

Tutoring Available at FMS

We wanted to reach out to all of of our Firebird Families as we continue our way through this 2022-2023 School Year at Falcon Middle School. We are spending more time working with all grade-level Firebirds on the mastery of their core contents. Due to this, FMS will continue to offer after-school tutoring and subject help.

Any attending students ARE REQUIRED to have a plan for being picked up at 4:30 pm.

Firebird Nation Campus Expansion

Construction Teams continue to progress with work on the addition to BRES. It is hard to believe that we are just a couple of months away from 100% completion. Inspections are already being completed and some rooms may even be ready for a final walk through punch list. The Gym roof is progressing and will be done by the end of this month. The installation of the wood floor in the gym has begun and will be completed by April. Concrete floors are getting polished. Plans are being put together to take down the separation wall from the existing building to the new addition the week immediately after school lets out for summer. We can’t wait to show everyone this awesome new space!
