TEXAS FINANCIAL AID REQUIREMENT
The state of Texas has a financial aid requirement in order to graduate.
Each 12th grade student must do one of the following in order to graduate:
- Complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); or
- Submit a signed opt-out form (military or not attending college).
The state adopted this requirement in response to colleges and universities reporting a substantial amount of unclaimed federal funds each year due to families not filing a FAFSA.
Here is some information from the College Board website:
Who Should Fill Out the FAFSA?
Anyone planning on going to college in the next academic year should fill out the FAFSA.
Here’s why:
- Each year, millions—sometimes billions—of dollars in federal aid is left on the table by students who didn’t file a FAFSA. It’s simple: If you don’t file, you won’t qualify for most financial aid.
- Your family doesn’t have to have a low income to qualify for assistance. Even if your family makes $200,000 a year, you could be eligible for aid.
- You automatically qualify for a low-interest federal loan when you submit a FAFSA. These loans are less expensive to pay back than many private student loans.
- Many work-study programs require the FAFSA.
- Some merit-based scholarships require the FAFSA to help them determine scholarship amounts.
We have a great partnership with LEARN Inc., and they are hosting 2 FAFSA Days April 3rd and 4th at CHS to assist families in meeting this graduation requirement.
- You can register for a FAFSA day appointment and find items needed to complete the FAFSA here: https://www.lubbockisd.org/Page/5008
- Please take advantage of this opportunity to file your FAFSA with an expert to see what your student may qualify for!
If your student is enlisting in the military or not attending college, they can get an opt out form from their alpha counselor.
TO DO ITEMS
- Check grades and communicate with teachers. Your final class ranking will be locked in based off of the 3rd nine weeks grade average. As soon as we are able to release the updated ranking, we will make an announcement. Keep in mind, your GPA is not finalized until the of the 4th nine weeks. Your college will receive a final transcript that reflects the 2nd semester grades. Don't give up on your grades the last nine weeks!
- Complete financial aid requirement (FAFSA or opt out).
- Email alpha counselor any scholarship offers to be printed in the graduation program. Possible scholarships can be found here: https://www.lubbockisd.org/Page/4640
- Email alpha counselor military enlistment paperwork (DD Form 4) to receive a cord for graduation.
- Request your final transcript through the online form which can be found here: https://www.lubbockisd.org/Page/12486 or through Ms. Beckett in the main office. The first transcript is free. All others are $1. Final transcripts will be mailed 2 to 3 weeks after graduation. Dual credit transcript (South Plains, Texas Tech, and UT) will need to be requested directly from the college.
- Verify if you need the meningitis vaccine for college admissions. Shot records may be requested at the nurses' office by scanning the QR code on their door.
- Take care of any pending fines (textbooks, library books, athletic equipment, etc). All fines must be paid in order to receive a diploma at graduation (a call out/email will go out to students who owe money).
- If you have not ordered a cap and gown, you will need to contact Herff-Jones as soon as possible for purchasing. Their number is 806-744-7737 and their office is located at 2904 50th Street.
