Principals' Post
Hello Panther Families,
Another great week of learning is in the books at Glen Oaks School! Have you ever asked your child about their day at school, just to get the answer "FINE"? Have you asked them what they did that day and they respond "I DON'T KNOW"? I know that my son is learning a great deal at school but when I ask him these simple questions, I get simple responses as well. Here is a great resource to help you frame conversations with your child about their day We hope this helps you spark some great conversations about school with your child!
Each week, we will be including TWO new features in our weekly Family Focus - Reader's Feature AND PBIS.
- Our Reader's Feature section kicks off this week and will highlight a weekly video of various staff members reading wonderful literature selections to your child. We hope this becomes an exciting part of your bedtime routine!
- The PBIS section will also include weekly information about what Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) looks like at Glen Oaks School - see the section below to learn more!
We also encourage you to send a reusable water bottle to school with your child each day. With the warm temperatures this past week (and into the near future), it helps the children stay hydrated. They also are encouraged to bring them to the lunchroom and refill them throughout the school day.
We hope you enjoy the various snapshots of learning from our past week!

NEW! Weekly Reader's Feature
Our Reader's Feature section will highlight a weekly video of various staff members reading wonderful literature selections to your child. We hope this becomes an exciting part of your bedtime routine!
Family Reading Night will be here soon - Wednesday, October 16th from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. In anticipation of this event, we will be sharing some of the books that will be highlighted at Family Reading Night with you and your child. All of the books come from either the Illinois Monarch or Bluestem lists, which are lists of 20 books compiled by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators. These books are nominated to win the Reader’s Choice Award for each category. The Monarch list is designed to encourage students from grades K-3 to read critically and become familiar with children’s books, authors and illustrators. The Bluestem list is designed for students in grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles and more complex text than the books on the Monarch list. As a school, we encourage our students to explore the titles found on these lists. If students choose to participate, they will be able to cast their vote for the book they believe should win the award! For more information, visit www.aisled.org
Check out our INAUGURAL Reader's Feature video linked below to enjoy our first book, which is read by Mrs. Reingruber and her son Tyler! You can also SUBSCRIBE TO THE YOUTUBE CHANNEL to see ALL of our Reader's Feature videos!

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports at Glen Oaks School
PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS seeks to reduce or eliminate poor behavior school wide through the encouragement of positive behaviors.
If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.
If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach.
If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach.
If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we… teach? …punish?
Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?
At Glen Oaks School, our goal is to TEACH students expected behaviors that foster success!
One of the main goals of PBIS is to create a positive school climate, in which students learn and grow. School climate effects attendance rates, academic achievement, and graduation rates. Regardless of socioeconomic status, students in a positive school climate are more likely to have higher test scores and greater academic success.
At Glen Oaks, four different protocols are enforced throughout the building, they are:
Be Caring
Be Here and be Ready
Be Safe
Be Respectful
The first focus of the year is Be Caring. We are identifying “How to be a good friend” with visuals on the PBIS bulletin board (located between the office and media center hallway) and a Cool Tool to follow. Pictures of students engaging with their peers will be featured on our bulletin board for this month’s focus. The goal is to highlight friendships and remind all students that Glen Oaks School is a place to build positive experiences with one another!
Tune in next week to learn about COOL TOOLS!
Parents Right to Know
On December 10, 2015, President Barack Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) into law. ESSA replaces the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). In accordance with ESSA, school districts who receive Title I funds to support students’ academic success are required to notify families they have the right to request, and receive in a timely manner, information regarding the professional qualifications of the student’s classroom teachers, including, at a minimum, the following:
(I) Whether the student’s teacher—
- has met State qualification and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction;
- is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which State qualification or licensing criteria have been waived; and
- is teaching in the field of discipline of the certification of the teacher.
In addition to the information stated above, parents of students in schools that receive funds under this part may request—
(I) Information on the level of achievement and academic growth of the student, if applicable and available, on each of the State academic assessments required under this part; and
(II) timely notice that the student has been assigned, or has been taught for 4 or more consecutive weeks by, a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements at the grade level and subject area in which the teacher has been assigned.
Our staff is committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking he/she needs to succeed in school and beyond. That commitment includes making sure that all of our teachers and paraprofessionals are highly skilled.
