Hillside Middle School
Fall 2019
Principal's Corner
As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, it is only appropriate that we give thanks to all of those who make what we do possible. As the saying goes, "It takes a village." Nowhere else is this more true than in education. We could not do what we do were it not for the constant support of parents at home - checking MISTAR, navigating Canvas, monitoring homework, and encouraging students to contact teachers for additional help. The Hillside PTSA is also ever present when it comes to supporting teachers and students, whether that's through meals on a late conference night or the thousands of dollars they raise through Carnival and later award our teachers through their classroom grant program. Finally, external agencies like the Northville Youth Network and the Northville Educational Foundation support our innovative teachers and their hard work in endeavors like Camp Hillside, the Makers' Club, and classroom grants that directly impact our students' daily lives.
From all of us at Hillside, thank you for all that you do to support us and the work that we do. We wish you a safe, restful beginning to the holiday season.
Regards,
William R. Jones
Principal
Focus on Well-being and SEL
This year we have had a focus on well being and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). With this focus, we shared with our staff the 3R Breaks that the high school introduced to their staff, students, and parents. Our staff supported this approach and we have made a similar commitment.
We are providing time for students to connect to home and allow students a true break over Thanksgiving. No homework, no projects, no assessments upon return. Furthermore, we would ask all of our teachers to unplug from work. No laptops, no emails, no grading, etc.
We will plan to follow a similar approach during the remaining breaks of the year: Winter Break, Mid-Winter Break, and Spring Break.

Football
The combined Northville Middle School football team improved greatly throughout the season. The majority of the games were competitive with the highlight of the season being a 26-0 win over Mason Middle School. I appreciate the team's willingness to work and to improve each week. Hillside football players contributed in a variety of ways. Tony Haupt was our anchor along the offensive line playing center, also along the line were Tashuan Quiney and Max Bates. On the defensive side of the ball Rishab Ashok and Brandon Buszka had great penetration and stopped ball carriers behind the line of scrimmage. The brothers Demetri and Niko Tsilimingras prevented any outside runs and had a sack on the quarterback. Yousef Rammaha, Dillijon Jusfui, and Jadin Bedi also contributed as defensive backs and defensive end limiting the passing game of our opponents. We had a lot of fun and look forward to the 2020 season!
Cross Country
2019 Hillside Cross Country Season
The boys had a fantastic season going 3-1 in dual meets, earning two team trophies at invitationals, and placing 2nd out of 12 teams at the league meet. Brendan Herger lead the way at the league meet with an overall 1st place finish. Captains Luke Schwartz and Nick Yaquinto lead the team throughout the season at practice and at meets collecting a handful of medals along the way. The girls had a tough schedule and finished 1-3 in dual meets. The team finished a very respectable 4th of 12 teams overall at the league meet just behind the three teams that beat them during the season. Captains Lizzie Lewis, Ella Christensen and Sydney Pedrosi lead the girls at practice and at meets this season. The JV boys won the league meet and the JV girls placed 2nd and will look to make next year’s teams even stronger.

HMS Drama Club
The Hillside Drama Club wrapped up another successful season on November 6th with a party where much food was consumed and merriment was enjoyed by all. While we were limited in scope and space this year, the club made the best of it was 7 weeks of Theater Boot Camp with NHS Drama Club counselors guiding us through the ins and outs of the theater. Well done everyone! Thank you to everyone who helped out and especially to everyone who participated.
