Summer School Placement (current Kindergarteners through Fourth Graders)
As you know, we have extended summer school this year to include 4 weeks and have expanded to two sites to accommodate more students. We are still limited, however, within these sites to just under 600 students district-wide. It’s important that everyone understand the format and purpose of the program and know that it is ok to mark NO if a student would not be a good fit. There are several reasons some students may not be a good fit. Some students may struggle to acclimate to a new building and new teachers. The program is a full day with the majority of the day spent on reading and writing instruction. Since Summer Success is not an IEP-driven program, students do not receive Special Education services as they would during the regular school year. While we do our best to make accommodations and support students to the best of our ability, they would not receive direct instruction according to their IEP in any given area, nor are we able to provide one-on-one para assistance for students. These are all things to keep in mind as you are reviewing the list for students and determining rankings.
While we have provided preliminary rankings, your staff knows your students best. If you are in agreement with the rankings completed by the summer school office, nothing needs to be done. If, however, you feel a child should be ranked higher or lower, in the Notes column (G), please indicate the NEW RANKING and include a brief description for your change. Keep in mind that if you move students UP on the list, you also have to consider moving students DOWN or removing them, as we need to keep the numbers for the rankings very close to the current amount due to limited space. After you go through the list, you can then discuss students that were not on your list but the team feels would benefit from the program. Please add their names, along with a brief rationale to the bottom of the list by Friday, January 26th. Additionally, if you have any 4th grade students who are currently on a Reading Improvement Plan (per SB 319) and do NOT meet the qualifications for exemption, be sure they are ranked as a “1.” Please indicate any SB 319 student in the notes column as well.
I appreciate all teachers' and staff members' time and attention to this task. I believe your work and feedback will make this a great process for all. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Please note that 5th graders will be selected as Middle School students are placed into Read 180 and/or Math 180. We anticipate this being finalized in March.
