FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

We are off to a fabulous start during a trying time for families and our community! It has been rewarding to see staff and students both working hard. Our staff worked harder than ever over the summer to prepare for students in this new environment. Staff had to recreate how we do school in a short amount of time.

As you have likely learned by now, our first 6-weeks of school ends on October 23. This will be the end of the trimester for periods 1 and 3. This Friday, October 2 is our halfway point for trimester 1 for periods 1 and 3. On Monday, October 26, we start the trimester one grading period for periods 4 and 5 which will end on December 10.

We will need to obtain an updated and final choice for your student’s method of education for trimester 2 and 3, by mid - October. Please watch for communication from your students’ advisor posing the following question and respond as soon as possible. Would you prefer your student to continue in their current online, distance+ schooling through the end of the year? Or, would you prefer that they join a new hybrid system which means they will be here at school in person 2 days a week and working online the other 3 days a week?

This high school is your school. Don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions or if we can do anything to make your students' high school experience better.

Go Wildcats,

Nate Salisbury

Principal

IMPACT AID FORMS ARE NOW ELECTRONIC!

Beginning Oct. 1, families can fill out their Federal Impact Aid form, online! This is the first year the Impact Aid Form is available electronically through Skyward Family Access. Login to your account and look for the notification at the top of the page. Once you’re finished, type your name at the bottom of the survey, which acts as your digital signature. It’s that easy! Remember, we need one for each student in your family.

As a reminder, this survey is required by all families in Oak Harbor, whether your family is military-connected or not.

National Voter Registration Day was Sept 22. It is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. First observed in 2012, it has quickly gained momentum ever since. Nearly 3 million voters have registered to vote on the holiday to date. Vote.org

Starting July 1, 2019, new legislation allows 16- and 17-year-olds to sign up as future voters and be automatically registered to vote when they turn 18. #FutureVoter

One of the strengths of the CharacterStrong curriculum is the relationships it builds between students to peers, students and school staff, students and family, and students and the greater community. This is done through intentional relationship-building activities that put a daily and weekly focus on what is most important to making this happen. We need to be reminded more than we need to be taught.

EMPATHY

Take five minutes at dinner to discuss the following questions:

  • How do you stay fully present and attentive when deeply listening to someone?
  • How do you feel when someone else truly understands what you are going through?
  • What helps you understand what someone else is experiencing or feeling? What gets in your way?

CHARACTER DARE - BE FORGIVING:

Think of someone who has hurt you. Go out of your way to smile and say hello to that person every time you see them. And mean it!!

We realize that your lives are busy and appreciate any amount of time that you can share with us. If you can only help financially, we appreciate that support as well.

Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month through Zoom. Please email OHHSPTO@gmail.com to receive an invitation. Monthly meeting reminders will be emailed by request.
