Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. The Trunk or Treat 2021 event was very fun and we want to thank everyone for participating! Many of our teachers are taking advantage of this time of year by having students compare and contrast the traditions of Halloween and Día de los Muertos. A lot of comparative language and vocabulary can be learned comparing these two traditions, and of course the students are very engaged. I want to thank Librarian Armando Ramirez, and The Friends of the Redwood City Public Library, for a wonderful Día de los Muertos assembly today(see the photos below)! Armando explained some of the Día de los Muertos traditions from Mexico, shared some artifacts from his altar, read a story aloud with Ms. Jan, and shared this beautiful recording of La Llorona by 11 year old Sofia Meneses. He also shared this Book List of titles about Día de los Muertos available at the Redwood City Public Library. Finally, each student also received a pre-packaged Pan de Muerto! Here are two more Día de los Muertos resources you can check out at home: Day of the Dead for Kids; Día de los Muertos Read Aloud for Kids.
I am encouraged by the recent news that the FDA has authorized Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine for children 5-11years old. Last week, the San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) hosted a webinar with San Mateo County Health addressing the latest COVID-19 community trends, strategies for safe schools, and vaccination updates. The event helped parents with answers to questions they may have had about the vaccination. Simultaneous interpretation in Spanish was provided. A similar event will take place this week in Spanish with Stanford Professor of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases Dr. Yvonne Maldonado, community pediatricians, and local health officers. The event is scheduled for Thursday, November 4, at 6pm. Simultaneous interpretation in English will be provided. Other resources for parents include tips from Johns Hopkins Medicine and a series of flyers from the San Mateo County Office of Education that share some of the reasons for children and youth to be vaccinated as well as myths and facts about the vaccine.
RCSD Panorama Climate Survey
The District Panomara Climate Survey will be administered twice this year to students in 3rd-8th grades, parents, and staff. Parents please complete this family climate survey prior to November 12th.

The Walk-A-Thon will be a fun event for all students and will take place during the school day November 19th.
What is new this year?
