Important Information for You!
Family Reading Night & Book Fair
One of my favorite family engagement events of the year happens this Thursday...Family Reading Night! Thank you to everyone who played or will play a part in the preparation for this event. Our families love this evening and there is always such a positive vibe in the air, I can't wait. While the required time for all certified staff is 4:45 p.m. until 7:15 p.m., any additional help getting supplies and set up completed after school will be greatly appreciated. Also, if there are any support staff that would like to work Thursday night, please let Megan C. or me know right away.
Additionally, don't forget the Thomson Book Fair will begin Monday. Teachers, if you haven't already, please make sure that you fill out the 'Wish List' papers. I can tell you from personal experience that it was fun to be able to purchase specific books for Elena's classroom that Mrs. Gist had picked special for her students knowing their interests and classroom library needs. Cheri has lots of the 'Wish List' slips, please make sure you take some time to fill these out.
Read by Grade Three Updates
While there is still district decision making in terms of Initial and Extensive Assessments and many questions that have not been answered in 'black and white', on February 14th the MDE released an updated Read by Grade Three Guide. I have spent time reading through the guide and encourage all of you to do so as well. I did have trouble getting the 'book' links to work. Please follow the link to the updated guide:

Early Release Wednesday
Megan C and I will be working to finalize the agenda for Wednesday's Early Release Day, but the focus will be on School Improvement, both implementation of our current plan and planning for next years. All certified and parapro staff members should plan to be in attendance from 1:45-4:45 p.m. Once the agenda is finalized in terms of times and specific tasks to complete, it will be sent out.
Kindergarten Round-up
It is here...Kindergarten Round-up time! As I shared in the last newsletter, Round-up appointments will begin being taken this Tuesday, February 26th. With this, the office gets extremely busy as each Round-up appointment takes the ladies in the office approximately 10 minutes to take/process. I ask that every one be mindful of this and please be conscious of time sensitive requests.
If you did not get the following passage in your newsletter before Intersession, please
include the following information this week:
Thomson Families: Kindergarten Registration for the 2019-2020 school year will be held April 22-26. If your child’s 5th birthday falls between June 15th and December 1st, we recommend signing up for the 'Early 5 Wait List'. You can do this now by calling Thomson Elementary at 810-591-0911. If your child will be ready for regular kindergarten and their 5th birthday is on or before September 1st, you can register for Kindergarten Round-up beginning February 26th. Call early to make sure you get an appointment that works with your schedule. Kindergarten Round-up is very important for incoming kindergarten students and their families. Don’t miss this important week. Call 810-591-0911 beginning February 26th to register.
Cardinal Code Focus for the Week: Bus Safety
This week's Cardinal Code Lesson Focus for the week is Bus Safety. While I know that teachers have expressed that it is difficult for them to 'control' what happens on the bus, which I totally understand, we can support this efforts of our drivers and monitors by reviewing what Cardinal Code looks and sounds like on the bus in the more controlled environment of the classroom. Some key points to remember and reteach are:
- Sit 'Seat to seat, Back to back, Backpack on your lap'.
- Stay in your seat, moving around the bus is dangerous.
- Use a voice that only your the person sitting with you can her.
- Never stand while the bus is moving.
Universal Breakfast
As you are aware, Universal (Free) Breakfast will begin this Monday, February 25th. Thank you in advance to Kay, Val, and our Breakfast Crew! If the experiences of the other buildings is any indication of what we will experience, we will see a little spike in the firsts few weeks to month and then it will drop off back to normal levels. I am excited to be able to offer this free option to all of our students because we all know you that thinking, staying focused, and learning is difficult when you are hungry. Our breakfast procedures will remain as they are, but we will be monitoring and making changes as necessary. If you have any questions or concerns, please see me.
