Sixer's Sunday School
Weekly Update for Parents, week of February 23
What a great Sunday!!
Sunday Morning's Lesson!
Because it was the Sunday before lent, we decided to put off the start of our new curriculum for a conversation about the origins and purposes of lent.
We started out talking about the structure of lent. It is the 40 days (not counting Sundays) that proceed Easter. It begins with Ash Wednesday and we learned where the ashes that are used during an Ash Wednesday service come from. Ask your Sixers to tell you the story!
We read Matt 3:16-4:11 and learned about the 40 days of fasting and sacrifice that Jesus undertook following his Baptism. We also spent some time on the 3 temptations Jesus faced and how he handled them. Maybe around your dinner table...you can see if your family can all remember the temptations and imagine how you might respond if placed in a similar situation.
We then moved to some familiar words from the season of Lent by learning the back story of Psalm 51. David's words of lament are even more powerful, when you know the reason behind the suffering. I'm confident your Sixer can remember what God King David into so much trouble! They may even remember the clever way that Nathan revealed God's punishment to the King...You can find that in 2 Samuel 12!
So, this time we REALLY mean it....Next week we start the New Testament studies with focus on the life and works of Jesus. Next week's lesson is "From Adam to Jesus."
We hope to see everyone there!
