Monroe Catholic Elementary Schools

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!

Thank you for joining us for the 2018-2019 School Year. As you know, we have transitioned our Preschool Program to offer a full day option to our families to better serve you. With this change, we wanted to make you aware of some modifications to general operations of the preschool program.

Morning Arrival

The parking lot door opens at 7:25. Preschool students may be brought into the gym to line up with their class between 7:25 and 7:40. Teachers & staff will be present to watch the students. They will be walked to their classroom at 7:42.


Students who are enrolled in the Full Day Option for Preschool will eat in the cafeteria/gym with the other preschool students. Lunch aides and volunteers will be on hand to provide help to the students. Preschool will have lunch from 10:40-11:10. Parent volunteers are highly encouraged; if you’re willing to volunteer- and fulfill some of your Family Service Hours, please contact Mrs. Melissa Maniaci at

Fog/Weather Delays

In the event of a Fog or Weather Delay, when school is delayed by 2 hours or more, the ½ day preschool students will not have class. The students enrolled in full day option may come to school at 9:30-9:45. Students enrolled in childcare can come at regular time.

Bathroom Use

Teachers will take students, as a class to the bathroom at scheduled times. When a child expresses need to use the bathroom, they will be escorted to the bathroom by an adult.

All children must be fully toilet trained to enroll. Students enrolled in the Monroe Catholic Elementary Schools preschool program must be able to use the bathroom on their own and spend the day without having an accident. Unfortunately, MCES staff cannot change children who have accidents because it violates the State of Michigan required ratio of adults to children when one teacher must leave the classroom to change a child. Pull-ups and diapers are not permitted. We understand accidents may happen, especially at the beginning of the year; parents will be called to bring a change of clothes, clean up any mess, and to change their child when necessary. If the child is capable of cleaning themselves and changing clothes, they will be able to remain at school. If more than one accident occurs in one day, parents will be asked to take their child home for the remainder of the day, even if the student is capable of cleaning themselves. Students will have a four week trial period from the start of school until Friday, September 14th. An accident log will be kept in each preschool classroom during this time to document accidents. A notice will be sent home for each accident that occurs while in our care and a phone call will be made each time to notify the parents. Students who continue having accidents after this date will not be able to return to MCES until they are bathroom trained. Once bathroom training is complete, students will be allowed to return on a trial basis.

Midyear Schedule Changes

With several preschool options now full, we will not be able to offer midyear schedule changes, meaning the preschool option you have selected for your child will be what they attend for the full year. If you are considering changing your child to the 5 day or full day option, please contact Mrs. Welton as soon as possible by calling 734-241-3378 or by email at, though we cannot guarantee space in any program.

Please view the school supply list on the website. Please note that students will need a tote, yoga mat, small pillow and blanket if they are enrolled in the full day option for rest time. MCES includes a fund in our annual budget for preschool supplies. Please know you will not be asked to provide additional supplies or funds throughout the school year. Please bring all your supplies to school on Move in Sunday (August 19th from 11:30-1:30).

Field Trips
Preschool attends educational and enjoyable field trips. Examples include a trip to the Fire Station, Farmer Charlie’s and the Toledo Zoo. MCES will now contract with St. Mary Catholic Central for use of their buses and drivers for preschool field trips, as we do with our school-aged trips. If you would prefer to drive your child, that is perfectly acceptable as well. Information about field trips’ cost and other requirements will be shared by the teachers as the year progresses. Parents who do not wish for their child to attend the field trip will need to keep them at home.

Preschool Teachers & Staff Professional Development
Throughout the year, our preschool teachers engage in ongoing professional development to ensure best practices, using the latest methods and skills. Preschool teachers and classroom assistants will be meeting monthly to talk about the social, emotional, physical and spiritual needs of the students and to engage both with the school leadership and with one another. We wanted you to understand that we take the education of your children very seriously and want to work together to ensure they progress as they should.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Conferences will be held for all preschool-aged students twice during the school year. Prior to these conferences, students will be assessed on a variety of abilities and teachers will share their progress with you.
Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences will be November 9th.
Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences will be in May

Reporting Absences
The teacher takes attendance and the school office follows up on any child absent from the program if a parent note has not been provided prior to that day. If it is necessary for your child to be absent from school, please call the office before class time and leave a message giving the reason for the absence. Please call (734)241-3923 to report an absence.

Please remember that children must be free of fever for 24 hours before returning to school.

Proper Attire
MCES students do not wear the school uniform until they enter Young 5s or Kindergarten.

Parents are advised to dress your child appropriately, in play clothing. Please refrain from sending your child in “good” clothes, as they are apt to get soiled stained or damaged. Clothing should allow for active participation in class activities. Gym shoes are the recommended footwear for our early childhood programs as they provide maximum safety for running, jumping, and walking. Shoes should stay securely on the child’s feet. Please refrain from sending your child in sandals, flip flops, crocs, shoes with a high heel, cowboy boots, or other fad shoes. Children are taken outside daily and should be dressed accordingly. Fall and spring require light jackets, hats, and rain gear. Winter gear includes heavy jackets, snow pants, boots, gloves, and hats. Please label all clothing items including outdoor wear. Inappropriate attire will be addressed on an individual basis.

Arrival & Departure Procedures

If your child is going to be picked up by someone other than you, they must be on the Authorized Pick-Up Form and must be prepared to show a picture identification card. No one may have access to any child without written permission of the custodial parent. If it is necessary for someone to pick up your child that is not on the Authorized Pick-Up form, please send in a note with the teacher.

We are proud of the fact that we do run a structured preschool program. In order to do so, we need to begin our activities on time. Please have your child in the preschool room before the start of the class session. Please pick up your child on time. He or she will worry if you are late. If you are more than 10 minutes late, your child will be signed into childcare and applicable fees will be applied. If you cannot be reached, we will contact the emergency numbers provided on your Authorized Pick-Up form. If you know that you are going to be late (special circumstances), please let us know.

Questions or Concerns
If a parent has a special concern or feels that the program and/or its staff should take a course of action, the proper steps should be followed for a quick resolution:

• First, speak with the teacher. Most problems can be solved efficiently at this level
• If you feel the matter needs further attention, contact the program director, Mrs. Welton.

Preschool Q & A Sessions

You're invited to our Preschool Q & A Sessions during Move-In Sunday on Sunday, August 19th in the St. Michael Campus Gym!

St. Michael Campus will be open that day from 11:30-1:30 for families to drop off supplies, meet the teachers and tour the classrooms.
