For Students Entering Grade 7 Fall 2021
Important Immunization Information
Maine State Law, Title 20-A Chapter 223, Subchapter II, sections 6352-6359, identifies the required immunizations for students enrolled in grades K-12. In 2017, one dose of Tdap vaccine became a requirement for children entering 7th grade. In 2018, Maine immunization law was revised to include vaccination for meningococcal meningitis; one dose is required for all students entering Grade 7.
Starting on 09/01/2021, religious and philosophical exemptions will no longer be viable in the state of Maine for entry into public school. However, a student covered by an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), who had an exemption on or prior to September 1, 2021 may continue to attend school under that existing exemption with a written statement from a physician noting that they have consulted with and informed the parent/guardian, of the risks and benefits associated with immunization. Medical exemptions will continue to be accepted with a physician's written statement that immunizations are medically inadvisable. This statement must be provided to schools before the first day of school each year. Should there be an outbreak of any communicable disease for which a student has no documented proof of immunity, CDC guidelines will be followed and the student will be excluded accordingly.
Therefore, for all students entering Grade 7 for the 2021-2022 school year in Maine we must have:
Documented proof of vaccination for one dose of meningococcal vaccine MCV4
Documented proof of vaccination for one dose of Tdap vaccine; OR
A medical exemption signed by a physician
Once the vaccination requirements are completed, you can send the documentation via mail, email or fax.

A child is not legally able to attend school in Maine without a complete record; failure to provide a complete immunization record or written medical exemption by 9/1/2021 will result in exclusion from school. If you have any questions, please contact the Scarborough Middle School health clinic at 730-4810 or 730-4811.

Hello and Happy April Scarborough families!
This month's Student Advocacy Virtual Classroom theme is Pay It Forward! Here is the link to this month's Counseling Corner.
There are a number of links to videos that promote kindness and thoughts on adding joy to those around us. There is also a picture of the movie that bears this title. It is a classic, but one best watched as a family.
Let us know your thoughts. And as always, please reach out to us if you have any needs.

Scarborough Middle School Families,
This update is in regards to the start of the middle school spring sports season. Practices for 7th & 8th grade springs sports will begin after April vacation on Monday, May 3, 2021. Prior to this date, we will hold mandatory call out meetings by sport. These call out meetings are designed to ensure that all student-athletes understand the expectations regarding COVID protocols in relation to their after school activity. During this meeting, coaches will have time to talk to their student-athletes regarding the season. A schedule for these meetings will be sent out at a later date, to those student-athletes who are registered in the FamilyID system for a middle school spring sport.
You may be aware that during the Fall and Winter season at the middle school, sports took place in-house, with no competition between other schools. The conversation regarding competition between other schools for the spring season is ongoing. When a decision is made regarding competition, we will send out a correspondence detailing that decision, along with any sport specific details and guidelines that families will need to be aware of before starting the season.
It is crucial for students wishing to participate in a spring sport at the 7th and 8th grade levels, that parents of those student-athletes complete the FamilyID online registration process as soon as possible. As the season gets underway, we will begin to use the FamilyID system to send out important information. The FamilyID registration can be found here → or by visiting www.scarboroughredstorm.org/registration
Thank you for your patience and we look forward to starting spring sports at the middle school!!
