Curriculum Corner

Literacy

We have started learning about folktales beginning with fables and have spent the last week learning about Tall Tales. These include stories such as Paul Bunyan, Johnny Appleseed, Pecos Bill, Davy Crockett, etc. Our focus through teaching these folktales is for learners to be able to recount/retell the story to determine their central message or moral.

We will continue our study of folktales by reading fairy tales and American legends.

We are working on our Dolch sight words in second grade. Your child has been assessed on these words and we will be learning the second grade list of words this year. Practice at home is always encouraged! If you are looking for some resources to work with your child on their sight words, check these out:

Class Elections

We had our preliminary elections for our Class President and Class Vice President. This has been an awesome way to authentically teach the voting process [2.SN.1]. The following learners below were elected by their peers as candidates for President and Vice President. Each learner was given a state, and the electoral vote of their state represented the amount of votes their vote was worth. It has been pretty amazing to see the strategies these candidates have used in campaigning for the elections. Keep scrolling below to see who was voted as the top two candidates for each position.
