Week of October 7, 2013

English Language Arts

Miss Warnke: We will continue using a variety of reading strategies as we read chapter 13-epilogue from “Number the Stars”. We will be focusing on using context clue with Achieve3000. Students should continue reading a fun book at home each night. 

Mrs. Allen: This week we are continuing our adventure through "The Cay". We are working on story elements, theme, and summarizing. We will also be brainstorming our ideas for the personal narrative writing piece.

Ms. Naze: We are reading Number the Stars and discussing the story in groups. Students are making predictions and inferences and writing discussion questions. They are also adopting words to be able to use in their writing. Students will be starting their personal narrative.

Math 4: This week we’ll be finding area of polygons on a coordinate grid. We will finish Unit 2, review and test this Friday.

Math 7, 8: This week we will be working with area and perimeter of triangles, trapezoids, and complex figures. We will have a test on Thursday to see how everything is going.

This week we are learning about worms, mollusks, arthropods and echinoderms. Students are taking notes to use on their project. The project details are in Schoology.

iPads are now updated

Students are excited to get back their iPad. Please monitor their use at home. Feedback from students indicate that they have rules in place at home which is great. It can become a distraction for them since they have access to so much through this device. As a learning tool it can be helpful and some are tempted to use it in other ways that distract from their learning. Just like monitoring the planner and not accepting "I don't have any homework," we have to be careful students aren't saying, "I'm doing my homework" under the guise of having an iPad in hand. Any feedback is appreciated as we adjust to this learning tool in the classroom and at home.
