Counselor's Corner
At Sunset Elementary our students often dance to fun music out at recess and love it. This week for Social Emotional Week, we brought out the disco ball and fun glow in the dark props for a “Let’s GLOW party” for each class.
There are great Intrapersonal and Interpersonal SEL Skills learned through Dancing. Some of these include: emotional awareness, accurate self-perception, and impulse control, teamwork, cooperation, relationship skills and social awareness. Dance also helps students work on problem-solving, reflection and responsibility.
Listening to positive music lifts the mood, reduces stress, lessens anxiety, improves exercise, improves memory, provides comfort and improves cognition. Studies have shown that it can also help students that struggle with social responses, communication skills, and attention skills.
Music is a great tool for resilience. When listening the brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that makes you feel happy. When dancing serotonin, (the feel-good hormone) increases with creates new neural connections and helps improve executive function, memory, and spatial recognition.
