Room 113 News
Mrs. Horn's 2nd Grade
Seasons Greetings!
December promises to be a busy month both inside and outside of the classroom for us all. I am looking forward to visiting with you all at Parent Teacher Conferences this month, and discussing your child's progress so far in second grade. If you are unable to attend your scheduled conference time, please contact me so we can plan another time/phone conference.
In just a few short weeks we will have Winter Break. There are lots of spirited learning activities in store for your kiddos in the meantime!
Upcoming Dates
12/10: Pajama Day!!
12/23: 1/2 Day
12/24-1/5: Winter Break
iPads in the Classroom
Room 113 used the district iPad minis for a full week in November.
Creative Brains in Action!
Build-a-Bug
We designed and created our own insects at the end of our last science unit.
Writer's Workshop
We will start off the snowy season with a quick creative writing piece. Students will write about what it might be like to be trapped inside a snow globe. This piece will integrate with a Shared Reading unit which focuses on following directions to create their snow globes.
Next, we will start back up on our persuasive writing practice. Your kiddos will continue to practice convincing their readers what the best gift in the whole world would be.
Reading
Students in Room 113 are practicing reading informational texts to identify main idea and key details, as well as following a sequence of events. As always, it is imperative that you practice reading at home with your children! I cannot emphasize this enough. As the weather starts to get chilly, encourage your kiddos to snuggle up with a book while they are stuck indoors.
Math
We will be wrapping up a geometry and measurement unit this month. Students have enjoyed getting up and exploring both our classroom and school hunting for different shapes, and measuring different items in both centimeters and inches. We also continue to build our math fluency by practicing quick math facts and basic addition and subtraction.
Social Studies
We are exploring the world around us, and have examined rural/suburban/urban neighborhoods, as well as landforms around the world. I am also excited to share that this December students will also learn about different holidays celebrated around the world! Your child will receive their own "passport" to different countries across the globe. They will learn essential facts about each country's traditions, and also have the chance to create gingerbread houses, dreidels, and more!
