Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 10/24 - 10/28
Red Ribbon Week Festivities!
Fundations:
This week we finished Unit 4 and had our assessment. The students are really becoming masters at knowing base words and suffixes! We also had some practice with compound words and "scooping" phrases for more fluent reading.
Literacy:
Welcome to NON-FICTION! We explored the different types of non-fiction texts - literary non-fiction, reference books, and biographies. We went on a hunt for text features in non-fiction books and found such things as headings, table of contents, captions, glossaries, and graphs.
We also read a really cool book about grasshoppers called Are You a Grasshopper? We did a K-W-L Chart to activate our prior knowledge for what we already knew about grasshoppers (that's our "K" for KNOW), then what we wanted to know (that's our "W" for WANT TO KNOW), and then what we learned (our "L" for LEARNED). Did you know there are more than 7,000 different kinds of grasshoppers?
Math: This week we worked on numbers that were greater than/less than or equal to each other. We had a game station where you rolled three dice and made a number then rolled again and made another number. Then we had to decide which number was the greatest or the least. Sometimes, we even got a numbers that were equal. We also spent lots of time skip counting by 5's, 10's, and 100's. Sounds easy, right? But NOT when you start on "any" number - like 38, 124, etc.! We need to practice this skill. Could be a fun "car game" when you're on a long trip somewhere!
Math Fact Fluency: We took our First Quarter Fact Fluency assessment this week. This assessment was given in two parts on two different days. One part is to assess 2nd Graders' ability to fluently add and subtract numbers within 20 using mental strategies (2.OA.2). In order to "Extend" in this area, students must be able to get all 28 problems correct and answer at least one problem correct on the second page. The second page contained math problems with 3rd Grade Standards. They can still meet 2nd Grade Standards if they got 0-1 problems incorrect. If the students had 2-4 problems incorrect they would be "Developing" on the report card. "Beginning" is where students would be in they had more than four problems incorrect.
The second fluency test is to assess our other Common Core Math Standard - 2.NBT.5 -
to fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operation, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. The grading scale for this is "Extending" if they had all the problems correct, "Meeting" if they had one problem incorrect, "Developing" if they had 2-4 problems wrong, and "Beginning" for more than four errors.
There will be two different scoring sections on the report card for this Fact Fluency component.
Writing Workshop: This week we took our pre-assessment for information writing. We began with Lab Reports and we joined Ms. Valentour's class for this activity. We did an experiment together with four different kinds of car ramps: a foil ramp, a rug ramp, a foam ramp, and a sandpaper ramp. We wanted to see how fast or slow a toy car would go down the different types of ramps. We're using academic vocabulary for science such as hypothesis, problem, materials, procedure, and results.
D.A.R.E.-We had our third D.A.R.E. lesson with Officer Hogan from the Woodridge Police Station today. Ask your child what Officer Hogan taught her/him this week!
Read Naturally - We have begun working with this new computer program to increase and strengthen our reading fluency. The passages are all related to science/social studies topics with great interest for students. The components cover not just words read per minute but also the vocabulary, predicting, retelling, and comprehension areas to make this a total reading experience. We are hoping to see great growth with the new tool provided at Meadowview School!
