Dan Steele - Legislative Session Update
WASA's Assistant Executive Director Steele will delve deeper into the current legislative session. A Q&A period will follow.
Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Discussion
Join Dr. Gil Mendoza and Gayle Pauley, Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI), in an open discussion on the ESSA and implementation considerations. They will share insights on similarities and differences between ESSA to the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). This is an exciting opportunity for Washington and hearing directly from our local superintendents will be critical to our beginning steps under the reauthorized federal legislation. While it is likely we may not yet have answers to some of the questions which may arise, given that the United States Department of Education will not have finished its requirements for completing the process of establishing regulatory and non-regulatory guidance, we are hopeful the opportunity for sharing will help us better understand questions from the field. We also hope to share where Superintendent Dorn has made some preliminary determinations on how we will proceed with our opportunity to redesign Washington’s Accountability Plan. ESSA is a critical piece of work on behalf of Superintendent Dorn. He is clear in his position of wishing to be as liberal as possible in our interpretation regarding ESSA, while being focused on serving the needs of students and families.
