Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

As this is the first newsletter of 2015, let me take a moment to wish all of you a Happy New Year! I hope your winter break was filled with memorable times with family and friends.

February is a month packed with learning and fun. Duncan Creek events for February include:

  • February 5th – STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) Night 6:00pm
  • February 9th – 1st Grade 100 Book Club Celebration 9:00am
  • February 10th – Mill Creek Cluster Math Night (Mill Creek HS 6:30pm)
  • February 12th – PTA Winter Bingo 6:30pm
  • February 16th – No School for Students (Teacher Workday)
  • February 25th & 26th – Early Release Days (Parent-Teacher Conferences)
  • Febrbary 27th – PTA Father/Daughter Dance 6:30pm

We continue to focus on safety this year. Beginning on February 2nd, ALL visitors to Duncan Creek must show a picture ID. This includes volunteers, lunch guests, etc. If you know someone will be coming to eat lunch with your child, such as grandparents from out of town, please send a note with the visitors’ names to your child’s teacher. The teacher will send the note to the lobby desk for when the visitors arrive. If you need to update your contact list on who may check out or have access to your child, please stop by the front office to update this in person. We will be checking visitor names against this list.

Also, as a reminder, please allow extra time when checking out your child. If a student is in PE or on the playground, you will be given a pass to collect the student from these locations. Once you have retrieved your child from outside, if you need to return to the building, you will need to walk around to the front entrance to access the school. If you are visiting your child for lunch, please wait for your child outside the cafeteria. Lunch guests should not be going to classrooms and interrupting instruction. Please say goodbye to your child as he/she leaves the cafeteria after lunch.

In addition, please be careful when dropping students off for morning clubs. Staff members and their children are entering the building, and it is difficult to see in the dark. I appreciate your continuous support as we work vigilantly to keep children safe at school. We are now in the second half of the school year. We will continue to work hard and finish the year strong.

Sincerely,

Carrie Yougel, Principal

AP News

Dear Parents,

February 25th and 26th will mark the second round of parent teacher conferences. As in the Fall, signups will occur online. You will receive information regarding how to do this again shortly.

There are many things to keep in mind to prepare for this second scheduled meeting. As we work with your child, it is very important that you continue to share information with us about your child’s life at home. Your child’s teacher may ask some of the very same questions he or she asked in the Fall; however, your answers may be different:

  • What does your child have to say about school at home?
  • Have there been any major changes in your child’s life since the last time we met?
  • Do you notice how much your child has grown academically? Socially?
  • Are you concerned about what next year will bring?

There will also be some things that we will want to tell you about your child in school. Some of these might include:

  • How your child is progressing academically
  • How your child gets along with others in class and outside
  • Updated assessment results
  • How your child seems to feel about him/herself
  • The quality and quantity of work your child completes
  • We will address summer school, if needed at this time

And there are questions that you might want to ask us. If you can’t think of any we can offer a few starters:

  • Is my child completing classwork in a timely manner?
  • Does my child have good work habits?
  • Does my child complete the work to the best of his/her ability?
  • Is my child performing at grade level?
  • Should my child be in after-school tutoring?
  • How can I help my child to work independently and make the best use of his or her time?
  • How much time should my child spend on homework?
  • What can we do at home to support classroom learning?

Remember, in order for our teachers to meet with all of their parents, conference times are limited; therefore, it will be helpful to come prepared, and on time for your scheduled conference. Thank you for all you do in being involved with your children.

Sincerely,

Erline V. Jackson

Assistant Principal, 2/5

PE News

I cannot believe half the year is over already, time is flying by. PE is off to a good start in 2015, the lower grades are working on a tumbling unit, and the upper grades are getting ready to finish up volleyball. Grades for your child may vary from quarter to quarter depending on what skill we are working on. Each child is given a skills test at the end of each completed unit and this will account for their grade along with any written test we may have as well as behavior and participation. Please make sure your child has on their sneakers on PE days or they will not be allowed to participate.

I want to congratulate the following students for representing Duncan Creek at this year’s Elks Hoop shoot competition at Grayson Elementary.

Emmie Adams

Kylee Melton

Vincent Forney- placed 3rd

Christian Brown- placed 2nd

Olivia Shaw- she placed 1st and will be competing at the next level. Good luck Olivia!!!

Our next competition will be the Pitch Hit and Run which will be held in the spring.

The tumbling team as had a great season so far, we have a performance on Feb 7th at Collins Hill HS, and our final performance will be here at Duncan Creek at the carnival. Please come out and support our team.

Our Box Tops competition is this month; please continue to send them in to help your child’s class earn an extra PE as well as helping the PE department to purchase new equipment. It is unbelievable how expensive equipment is these days.

Stay Healthy,

Dayna Alkire-Barry
