Maverick Express - October 2017
October 2017
MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TODD CORSETTI
If I had written the script a year ago of how I would have wanted the first month of the school year to have gone, I don’t think I could have written a better script than what we have experienced so far. We have had a strong start to the year thanks to the grit of our staff, the energy of our students, and the support of our parent community. We are still completing construction items and working through learning how our building functions. Our kids have been flexible and understanding as we work through the inevitable kinks of running a new facility.
I hope you had the opportunity to attend our MPACT kickoff celebration on September 7th or our 5K and open house on September 23rd. If you did, you saw the community of south Beaverton and west Tigard come together around Mountainside High School in a strong way. Both were special events that will live long in the lore of the opening of Mountainside, and I want to thank everyone who was involved in getting us off the ground.
Thank you for your patience in our moving of Back to School Night to Monday, October 23rd. We realize this is late in the semester, but we want the availability of our full parking lot to ensure a positive experience for our community. More details are available in the pdf. below regarding Back to School Night.
We could use your help in the drop off and pick up of students. If you are dropping off or picking up your student, please pull as far forward as you can. We are experiencing cars backing up onto 175th which causes a safety concern. When our student/parent parking lot is complete in mid-October this should be less of an issue, but in the meantime, please pull forward when possible.
We had a great turn out for my first Principal’s Coffee on Friday, September 22nd. Moving forward, the Principal’s Coffee will occur the third Friday of each month at 9:00AM in the community room. This is an informal opportunity to find out what’s new at Mountainside and/or to ask general questions.
If you have questions, you can reach me via email at: todd_corsetti@beaverton.k12.or.us
Sue Neeway is my amazing principal’s secretary, and she can be reached through the Mountainside Main Line at 503-356-3500 or by email at sue_neeway@beaverton.k12.or.us

DISTRICT CANVAS
This year we are simplifying the signup process for parents and guardians to become observers. Once we have it fully implemented, parents will be able to become an observer in all of their student’s classes by registering just once.
Some of you have already signed up as a Parent/Guardian Observer. Some of you did that on your own, others may have been invited by a teacher to observe their Canvas course.
If you were previously invited to become an observer, there are two common problems that we’re seeing:
1. You can only see courses you were invited to observe, but can’t see the rest of your child’s courses.
2. You can’t add other students to observe, e.g. a second child.
These problems came about as a result of the change to how we enroll observers.
Our technology team is working with Canvas to solve this problem and we’ll let you know as soon as we have a solution. Until then, we apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your understanding -- this is not something that teachers can control or fix.
COUNSELING
The week of October 23rd- October 27th will be Career Week at Mountainside! Students will participate in career-focused Advisory lessons, a volunteer fair and a career fair that week.
On Thursday, October 26th, we will also host a very special evening event: "Building Mountainside: the professions that built our school" with a keynote speaker from Hoffman Construction Company. It will be a fantastic opportunity for students and families to get an inside look into how our school was crafted and the professionals that made it happen. Save the date for this special presentation!
ATTENDANCE
ATTENDANCE POLICY
If a student needs to leave school during the day, a parent or guardian should call the hotline in the morning, or send a note with the student. Students need to check in with our attendance secretary in the main office and pick up a Mav Pass which will allow them to leave during class. They should pick up this pass before school or during a passing time before the class they will be leaving. Once they have the Mav Pass, they can leave the building at the excused time. They do not need to check out in the office before they leave.
Unless there is an emergency, please do not come to the office the last 20 minutes of the day to excuse your student early from class. If your student needs to leave early, please have them come to the office with a note and receive a Mav Pass before class.
All late students should sign in at the attendance desk.
A student who knows ahead of time that they will be absent for more than three consecutive days should pick up a pre-arranged absence form at the attendance desk to excuse the absence.
If your student has been marked absent in a class by mistake, they should contact their teacher and bring a note from the teacher to the attendance secretary to get the absence excused.

MPACT - MOUNTAINSIDE PARENT GROUP
MPACT has been working hard for our kids and the school. We had a super successful School Kickoff event on September 7 and have been working to get our concession stands open on a regular basis.
Our marketing team has been doing lots of tweaks and updates to our website . You will notice that we just added a spot on our home page to show our most recent tweets. We are also working on how to add other social media for those who are not on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. We hope that this will get more information out to the entire community. The website also has upcoming events, our meeting minutes, and links to find out about new volunteer opportunities.
Our MPACT general meetings have been scheduled every other month. The next one will be at Mountainside on November 15 at 7PM in the Community Room. The one following will be January 17, 2018.
Founding Families
We need your help! We are all finding out just how much it takes to launch a new high school. The school programs that we are trying to support are in need of our help. Groups like leadership, the Dude Be Nice Club, the activities group for school dances, and concessions. Concessions is starting off much slower than planned due to the equipment still needed. We are still in need of at least two more commercial refrigerators, several popcorn machines, toaster ovens, a hot dog warmer, and commercial coffee/hotwater makers.
Please consider opening your heart and donating (which is tax deductible) so that we can help these programs hit the ground running. The goal for our Founding Families campaign is to raise $20,020 by December 20. You can see by the measuring tool on our website www.mountainsidepact.org/fundraising that we have raised just over $4,200 so far. Please help MPACT MavUp! for our school!!
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!!!
For new families, the Beaverton School District has implemented a district-wide Volunteer Management System (VMS). All volunteers need to complete an application and background check. Once the background check is cleared, a profile will be created. Through myvolunteerpage.com volunteers will be able to update personal information, view and sign-up for open volunteer needs, and communicate directly with the school Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteers will be able to use this profile from their first volunteer activity to their last. To apply and set up your profile, follow this link Volunteerism & Community Engagement Opportunities

PERFORMING ARTS
Band
Jeremy Zander, Jeremy_zander@beaverton.k12.or.us
Mavericks Band Booster board meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7:00PM in the lecture hall. Please see the calendar on www.mountainsidebands.org. to read about all of our upcoming events
Volunteering with the Band Program: If you are interested in lending your talents to the band program (no musical experience necessary), please sign up on myvolunteer.com under the category “Mountainside Bands and Ensembles”.
ATHLETICS
No Pets
We have had many pets on the campus but they are, unfortunately, not allowed, with the exception of service dogs. I have a dog myself and would love for her to run around, but with our turf fields having animals relieve themselves on the turf is not healthy for our athletes. Please help monitor our facility so we keep it clean and new.
Athletic Schedules
Our hope is to have a link for future schedules on our school website. Some of our Beaverton high schools have gone with a website, and we are hopeful to be on board soon as well. For now, please check the metroleague.org website for schedules and scores.
Winter and spring sports
Some of our winter and spring athletic teams may start “out of season” training, so please check out the school website for our Coache's Bios that will include their email contacts if you have any questions.
It has been great to see the excitement at our contest and not to mention the number of you that have been attending!!! What an AWESOME place to be!!! GO MAVS!!!
Join our ski team
Now is the time to consider joining Mountainside Ski Team. While we race in the Metro League starting in January, we start dryland practices November 14! First time skier or seasoned rider, we accept everyone into our fun and welcoming team. Our past boys and girls ski racers have placed among top Metro athletes and have often qualified for state championships. We'll coach you up, get you in skiing shape, and help you on your way toward varsity competition with the fastest high school athletes in the state!
