The Second Grade Scoop

Dear 2R Families,
Thank you to everyone who was able to send their child to school today for the make-up snow day. I am very pleased to share that the school had at least 80% attendance so the day will count! I hope everyone has a wonderful and relaxing Spring break. I look forward to seeing the kiddos again on Monday, April 17th!

Math
In Unit 8, students have been learning all about shapes. The students learned to classify shapes by their attributes, such as their number of sides, angles, vertices (corners/points), parallel lines and right angles. Please be sure to read the Family Letter in the HomeLinks book for more information on the vocabulary we are learning.
To help us practice identifying shape attributes, we built shapes with PlayDoh and played the shapes edition of the popular game, Headbands. Students had to hold a picture of a shape up to their head without looking at it and try to guess what shape it was based on clues given by their partner. Lots of fun!
At home, please continue to...
- Practice basic addition and subtraction math facts.
- Continue to encourage students to explain their thinking aloud or on paper.
- Talk about shapes you see in everyday life. Discuss their amount of sides, angles, vertices, etc.
- Include your child in any measuring or estimating done in everyday life.
- Check out Number Grid Difference, Shape Capture and Basketball Addition games on the Everyday Math website. Please email me if you need your student's login.

Growth Mindset Monday
We read a great book, Dot by Peter Reynolds, which is about a little girl who struggles in Art class, but eventually surprises herself and inspires others with her artwork. We brainstormed what it means to take risks, put in effort, be dedicated, etc. We then set off to discover what we could create from a simple dot (and some watercolor paint!)

Order Due Date - Saturday, April 29th
Thank you to everyone who participated in the March purchase. Because of your orders, we earned 10 free books for our classroom and a class set of book coupons, which will be sent home with the next catalogue. I will send home the April catalogue on Monday.
Please take a few moments to explore the April selection next week together and let your child help choose books he or she is excited to read. For a wide selection of quality children's books that are just right for your child's reading level, please order online at scholastic.com/readingclub.
If our class places $50 worth of orders all together, we will earn $8 in free books. With each order placed, our class also earns bonus points that I can then use to purchase more books for the classroom or even other materials like math manipulative for the classroom. It is a great program to get involved in. Thank you for supporting your child’s reading both at home and in the classroom!
