Notes from the Administration

We've had an exciting two week at Whittier ES!

Thanks to all of you that supported our Chick- Fil- A fundraiser last week. We raised $289 towards technology.

Thank you to everyone who supported our 5th Annual Tech Trek. Mr. Migdal, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Schwiegerath were going to kayak race across the Whittier lake, if our bright orange envelope campaign netted $5000. We raised $3500 that day, thank you for your support! Our donations have continue to pour in from our students who turned in labels. Currently we have raised a total of $11385.

  • Our goal this year was to raise enough funds to purchase Chromebooks for our 5th grade students to be 1:1 with devices in their classrooms. With the proceeds that we have now, we will be able to buy 48 additional Chromebooks. We will still need funds to purchase 24 Chromebooks.
  • When we advertise for our restaurant nights, we will be using those funds to support the purchase of the additional 24 Chrome books. Thanks for all of your support!

Thank you to everyone who supported our Fall Harvest Parties this week. Our students had a great time.

Conferences are fast approaching. Use this link to register for a conference:

Wednesday, November 7 - Schools open 4 hours late at 12:30. Evening conferences will be held on this day.

Thursday, November 8: Schools open 4 hours late at 12:30. Evening conferences will be held on this day.

Friday, November 9: Schools close 3.5 hours early at 12:00 noon. Afternoon conferences will be held.

Should you have specific questions about your child's conference, please don't hesitate to contact your child's classroom teacher.

Many of our students need a snack during the day to help them stay on task and learn. In many cases, families find it difficult to send a snack in for their child each day and they ask for help from our school. We are currently looking for donations of snack foods from our community to continue to provide this help for our students in need. We would appreciate donations of any healthy, prepackaged, nut free snacks families might be willing to send in. If you would like to help us in this way, please send any donations to Mrs. Miller, Community Liaison.

Fall Assessments

As we begin our fall assessments, we wanted to shared that as part of our English Language Arts (ELA) assessments, you might notice a few changes.

It is critically important to maintain consistency in assessment protocols within schools and across districts. FCPS has updated the reading assessment in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. The updated reading assessment provides: structures to make administration and scoring more consistent across teachers and the comprehension conversation rubric clearly defines the criteria for each comprehension score.

The new guidelines and rubric will enable your child’s teacher to sharpen his or her observation of reading behaviors and provide a comprehensive literacy experience that will move your child’s reading forward with intent and precision. As a result, the previous reading assessment in the spring of 2018 may result in a slightly higher score than in the updated reading assessment in the Fall of 2018.

We are looking forward to sharing lots of information with you at fall conferences.

If you have any concerns please contact Jacqueline.Cramer@fcps.org Whittier's Literacy Specialist.

Parent Volunteers/Visitors to the Building

This year, FCPS has introduced a new systematic visitor management system called Raptor. Raptor compares visitors to our school against national data bases from all 50 states to ensure the safety of our students. Visitors to our school may be asked to show identification before entering the building. Parents wishing to volunteer for school events, chaperone a party, or chaperone a field trip will still need to complete our Volunteer Training. We will offer volunteer training once a month. Our next training will be on Monday, November 19 at 6:00pm.

Thanks to all of our WATCH DOG participants

Watch Dogs is a national program that promotes strong male role models in public schools. We are entering our third year of the Watch Dog program at Whittier ES and are looking for volunteers to come to school on the day of your choice to work with our students and staff. All dads, grandfathers, uncles, step dads are encouraged to join our team of WATCH DOGS! If you would like to volunteer, please send an email to Mr. Byrd and he will get you set up with a day to volunteer. matthew.byrd@fcps.org
