4th Grade Send-Off Information
This letter was sent home as a hard copy as well:
Dear Families,
On Tuesday, June 22nd, the 4th grade classes will partake in a special event that has been happening at Hope Valley School for years. It is the 4th grade send-off. It is a day of fun for the children. This day has always been about the children and they will have a fabulous day. This event is a way to say great job for the 5 years they have been at Hope Valley School. The format of the day will be different than previous years. Unfortunately, we will not have any visitors or volunteers for the day as schools still have to follow all the necessary protocols. With that being said, we are still planning on making the day unforgettable for the students.
There will be a brief gathering with the students, teachers, and me first thing in the morning. I plan to have each child share a special time they had while at Hope Valley School which is always so entertaining for me. You may want to help your child think about one of their most memorable times to share. Children can share or I will be more than willing to read them if anyone feels uncomfortable. They will receive a special certificate as well.
Students will also have time to be outside on this day. They will get to play games, eat lunch, and sign yearbooks, which they will receive that day. The PTO will also be providing lunch. The children should dress comfortably for the day’s activities. They should wear sneakers, bring a water bottle and a beach towel to sit on outside. Sunscreen should be applied at home or should be something your child can put on independently here at school. Sunscreen cannot be shared.
I am very excited to be able to have this special day for our children. This will be an experience they will always remember.

4th to 5th Grade Summer Reading
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Have you ever heard of the summer reading slide? It is estimated that the summer reading slide accounts for about 80% of the gap in reading achievement by 9th grade. Summer break is blamed for students losing anywhere from one to three months of instruction. This can add up over the years, leaving students far behind where they should be. So, what can you do to prevent this from happening to your child? Encourage your child to read! Studies have shown that students who are encouraged to pick a book that will challenge and interest them will beat the summer slide and continue to make gains in their education. Try these tips:
- Visit the public library for free access to a variety of books and ebooks.
- Ask your child to tell you about what they are reading. What corrections do they have to the text?
- Encourage your child to read out loud to you.
- Read out loud to your child. Studies have shown that even older students still enjoy being read to!
Encourage your child to read and they will return to school more confident in their reading skills, more motivated to read beyond what is required, and more excited about reading!
Chariho Middle School requires your child to read 2 books over the summer. Book recommendations are attached, but students are encouraged to read any book that matches their interests and challenges them! Students must complete a book project for each book to receive credit for summer reading. Students should bring projects in on the first day of school. Project options and criteria can be found on the CMS library summer reading page (see directly below for the link).
Students who successfully complete two summer reading projects will attend a grade level celebration at the end of September. Your assistance is crucial in supporting academic rigor and achievement at Chariho Middle School. Your time and effort in helping your child complete their summer reading requirements are appreciated. Thank you in advance for making the summer reading program a success!

Message from the Superintendent
Throughout this month we may be dealing with high temperatures. Please take a few moments to review the list below so that we can all work together during these last few weeks of school to try to stay cool and hydrated. Thank you for your help and support.
Chariho is working to reduce the exposure to heat e.g. room ventilation, use of fans if necessary, rooms with air conditioning units, lowering shades, and turning off lights.
We are reminding staff and students about the prevention, monitoring, and identification of heat stress symptoms. Please review the guidance from the CDC along with the graphic below.
We would like to ask our families to consider suitable clothes options that incorporate UV protection and cooling fabrics.
We will modify normal school activities during excessive heat, for example asking students not to run during recess.
We will continue to increase access to the coolest areas of the school grounds or facilities for lessons or other activities.
We will work to ensure students wo require additional supports are appropriately supervised, including the monitoring of their hydration.
We will utilize water bottles and encourage students to have water with them.
We will facilitate and encourage students to drink plenty of water by providing water breaks and staying out of the sun.
As shared in our district messaging, we are supporting no masks outside per the State guidance. Please reach out to your principal if you want your child to wear their mask outside and speak with your child so they are aware of your expectations.
If you have any additional questions please reach out to the principal.
Take care,
Gina Picard
Superintendent
Important Information regarding DL
If you know your child is going to be out because of allergies, etc., parents need to inform the teacher the day before to access DL. It is important that teachers have time to gather the proper materials for DL to be successful. I understand it is difficult to make the decision the day before but please know how difficult it is to expect a teacher to have things ready for the day when we get an email at 8:00 am. Without the proper materials, your child will not have what he needs for the day. Thank you for your understanding.
Updated Mask Guidance (from the June E-Update)
On May 18, 2021 the State of RI and RIDOH updated their K-12 Health and Safety Guidance which provides additional mask guidance for schools. Masks are still required indoors, however we can now allow our students to remove a mask outdoors if they can maintain three feet apart and remain in their stable or classroom pods. You can locate the update by clicking here. You can also find our District updated Mask Policy by clicking directly below.
You can read Superintendent Picrad's June e-update in its entirety by clicking here.
End of Year Events
I wanted to give families an update of the protocol for spring events. Students will get to experience fun events that we have typically always done at school like field day and all end of year celebrations. I am very happy to be able to bring these events back after we ended last year. The big difference is that we will not be having parent volunteers or spectators attend in person. Some of the events will be recorded or live streamed. I know this may disappoint some of you but we are still dealing with COVID. Although CDC has lifted some restrictions, local and state organizations can continue to adhere to their current plans. A large majority of adults are vaccinated but the issue is that our children have not been vaccinated. Also, vaccinated people can still transmit the virus and pass it. We have been so careful all year and I do not want to jeopardize the health and safety of students and staff. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

From your Superintendent
As a reminder, if your child is registered for in-person learning the only time they should be accessing distance learning (DL) is if they have symptoms, are in quarantine/isolation, their class/district/school is placed on distance learning per the district/school administration or the child was registered for DL as their learning scenario.
Kindergarten Registration is open
Spread the word! Chariho Kindergarten Registration is now available to our families through digital pre-registration. Check out our digital flyer.
