Patriot Notes by Dr. Laura Raeder, Principal
Ready….Set….Go! Welcome to the 2020-21 school year. We are excited to finally have students in the building! Staff members have spent the summer making certain Lincoln High School is ready for students. The entire school has been deep cleaned and we are anxious to meet the new and returning students. LHS is dedicated to providing the safe and exemplary education that you expect from Lincoln High School.
Alongside me will be Joey Struwe, Activities Principal, and Mitch Lynch, Assistant Principal. A long-time LHS math teacher rounds out our administration team. Danyelle Brown, our new Assistant Principal, has been at LHS for almost 20 years and we are excited for her to serve all LHS students and families. Additionally, we have several new teachers that will be joining our already powerful staff: Abby Berke, English; Lynae Dadisman VanDenTop, Math; Tyler Fluth, Social Studies; Ashley McKeown, World Language; Kyle Muhlenbeck, SPED; Jacob Noordermeer, Fine Arts; Travis Schafer, Social Studies; Kyle Stegeman, Science; Brooke Weber, English.
Our first scheduled opportunity to meet is Patriot Power Day on August 13th. On this day you will receive your schedule, get your ID picture taken, prepay for lunches, yearbooks, activity passes, and pay any fees. There are also a limited number of parking permits available to Seniors and Juniors (one per family.) Students must have all fees paid prior to receiving a parking permit or Chromebook. More information about this day will be mailed and emailed to you.
Have a great rest of the summer! Go Pats!

Due to COVID-19 we will have many precautions in place this year. We have extended the time for this event and markings will be in place for students to remain six feet apart. The volunteers will be wearing masks and students who attend are encouraged to wear masks. Many stations will be outside; and doors will be propped open inside the Lincoln building to decrease exposure to frequently touched surfaces. We will also have designated one-way hallways where students may be walking. Many items can be paid for online prior to Patriot Power Day. Students do not need to attend this Patriot Power Day. If students attend, they will be able to pick up class schedules, take school pictures and receive their student ID’s. Important Return to Learn Information
Students and staff are expected to complete the health screen self-evaluation daily before arriving at school.
Because decisions will be made quickly to protect the health and safety of students and staff, it is critical that parents/guardians provide accurate and updated contact information, including phone numbers, address, emergency contact information, etc. Parents/guardians must contact the school office when information changes.
Families are encouraged to have a plan for childcare and at-home learning, if it becomes necessary.
Starting this school year the Sioux Falls School District has
a new Grading Scale. See below:
A 90-100
B 80-89.9
C 70-79.9
D 60-69.9
F 59.9 and below
We have also adopted semester grading. Semester grading also allows students to demonstrate proficiency throughout the semester. Each semester will now be 85% of the final grade and the semester test will remain 15% of the final grade.
Teachers will still post grades through infinite Campus to continue to provide real time grades. Students and parents will see the following grades at the end of each semester:
Mid-Term
Semester Test
Final Grade
Health Information From Our Nurse
Hello and welcome back to the 2020-21 school year! In preparation for the upcoming year, we must obtain new forms for health concerns including doctor’s orders. I am attaching a link to access the forms to be completed based on your student’s health needs. If you have already updated these forms and submitted them for the 2020-21 school year, please disregard.
Medication administration information and required forms may be found on the district website: https://www.sf.k12.sd.us/parents/health-services
If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please contact me at Heidi.LeBon@k12.sd.us. Thank you for your cooperation. I look forward to having your children back for another healthy and successful school year.
Lincoln High School Freshman Academy
Welcome incoming 9th graders, parents and guardians. At Lincoln High School, we recognize the superior qualities of our school and realize the traditions of rigor and outstanding performance that the students and staff have displayed throughout Lincoln’s history. It is with honor that we get to serve the students of Lincoln High School as the teachers of the Freshman Academy.
What is the Freshman Academy? The Freshman Academy is a structural support system that is designed to help students transition into Lincoln High School. The framework includes an interdisciplinary collaborative team approach that provides the capacity to enhance student performance by allowing time for teachers and support staff to design and implement plans to help each student reach their full potential. Teachers will work together to communicate regularly with families in an effort to help students develop academically, socially, and emotionally through their 9th-grade year as they earn credits to reach sophomore status.
Transitioning to high school can be challenging in many ways and research shows that a Freshman Academy support system helps students transition more effectively in the areas of academics, grade retention, behavior modification, and emotional support. In our first and second year with a Freshman Academy model we increased retention rate, decreased behavioral events, increased overall GPA and credits earned, and increased semester test scores.
As parents, guardians, and mentors you have played an important role supporting our incoming 9th graders. You have an in-depth understanding of your student. Through the Freshman Academy our teachers and staff will develop quality relationships with you and your student to better enhance their high school experience. Be assured that each of our teachers will have high classroom expectations presented with a positive and encouraging outlook. It is with great enthusiasm that we are looking forward to working with you in a manner that leads to the ultimate success of all of our students!
Sincerely,
Joshua Smith
Freshman Academy Coordinator
