Education of Slaves
Jason Abbott 5
Why were slaves not educated?
If a slave were to become educated they would realize they could rebel against their owner and claim their freedom. Even a slight education could form very high ranking issues, slaves may leave or kill their masters. A field worker may just run away if they knew they could. They also my plan out an attack to kill their owner.
How did some slaves manage to get an education?
Some slaves would be able to steal books and/or newspapers from their owners. Others would, in rare cases, be taught from their master or from a fellow slave. These were highly punishable acts, if found with a book a slave may be whipped.
Why would slaves be taught by their owner?
Slaves that working in the house would generally be taught to read and speak so the owners can talk with them easily. However, those who were in the field were generally deprived of their education so they would not run away or rebel against their owner. Some slaves would take the risk of teaching others though. Even for communication with their slaves, there were still risks taken.
