Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Welcome back! We hope that the first week of school has been enjoyable and new routines have been established in your household. Our team has hit the ground running this year and there is an incredible sense of promise echoing throughout our hallways. The first two days of school were spent modeling procedures and expectations for all students. This included how to safely line up after recess, where to sit in the cafeteria, why rules of safety are important when riding the school bus, and the reasons for remaining alert during car dismissal. Students were very attentive and mastered routines quickly.

Hopefully you have noticed a great improvement in the volume of traffic that typically becomes a problem for us at arrival and dismissal times. Thank you for your efforts to follow our most updated protocols! One major change we have made this year has been in our bus dismissal procedure. Students are dismissed from their classrooms and this change has allowed us to utilize every bit of our front driveway, resulting in much more efficient dismissals. We expect to improve each day as we learn the typical pattern of bus arrivals.

We hope to see you at the annual PTA Ice Cream Social on Thursday, September 20, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. This is always a great event! We also look forward to seeing you at our Open House sessions coming up on September 24 and 25. There, we will provide academic updates and you will have another opportunity to tour classrooms and visit teachers. We plan to have our District's school resource officers share some very important information regarding life safety protocols as well.

Lastly, we hope that you enjoy our updated newsletter format. We will plan on sending home newsletters on a bi-weekly basis and post each "Center Stage" newsletter on the WCS page of the District website, under the "What's New" section. Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Rory O'Connor

Car Arrival Procedure

The protocol has been updated to help alleviate traffic congestion in the morning. At 8:20 a.m., we will switch to using both lanes of our back driveway to help address traffic that builds on Lowell Road, and we will close the gate at 8:32 a.m. When the gate closes, we ring the bell to line up students from Ready, Set Go and we need all vehicles to be clear of the driveway. Please plan accordingly and we thank you for your support!

Spanish, Digital Literacy and RtI; A "WIN" for All

This year, all students will receive Spanish and Digital Literacy instruction once per week for 45 minutes. In order to accomplish this, we built an academic schedule that includes a 45 minute block of time each day reserved for these classes. Not only does this updated programming afford students more opportunities, it has also improved our Response to Intervention (RtI) effort by making the intervention time completely separate from interfering from whole group instruction. Response to Intervention services will be delivered through an initiative called "What I Need," where all students receive academic support through flexible grouping throughout the school year. WIN rotations will begin in mid-October after we have reviewed benchmark assessment data.

Cafeteria Update

This year, we have made great improvements to the overall efficiency of our lunches for students. We have transitioned from three lunches to six in order to provide students with more time to sit, relax, eat, and be social with one another. We have noticed a much calmer cafeteria setting in only the first few days!

I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared

Through a coordinated effort with the Windham Police Department, we will soon be reading a story to students called, "I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared." This in an age-appropriate story for elementary students that provides guidelines for how to respond in the event of an emergency. School Resource Officers Greg Iworsky and Phil O'Laughlin will be teaming up with several officers to help lead this charge.
