Message From Ms. Appiah-McNulty
Good Afternoon! Last week our Leadership Team met to discuss school-wide concerns and began the problem solving process. To provide transparency for the meetings, the meeting notes will be shared with the school team. Below is a link of our meeting minutes from 9/11/19.
Take-Aways From Meeting
NWEA Testing Process- Reorganize with the support of the department chairs. We will look at double blocking (A-Day, B-Day Schedules). All teaching staff will support the testing process in order to ensure that our ELA and Math Teachers are not losing too much instructional time. Process to be developed before the winter assessments.
DMP Training- Teachers need to be trained on the online system for entering interventions and utilizing the DMP process. Ms. Melendez and Ms. Cullins will prepare a training for staff by September 17, 2019. Training will be extended to teachers on a voluntary basis. Look for an invite this week.
PBIS Staff Expectations- The corrected RMS Matrix posters have come in. If you do not have a corrected poster displayed in your room, please see Ms. Appiah-McNulty. When redirecting students, the language on the posters need to be used by all staff. We should be teaching from the RMS Matrix and rewarding students based on meeting the expectations. If you need more Senator Bucks, please see Ms. Appiah-McNulty or Ms. DeLoach.
Smoother Morning and Lunchroom Routines- It is essential that we solidify our process for dismissal of students in the morning and clean up the lunchroom procedures. Administration is noticing a disparity in the procedures from morning to morning depending on who is supervising as well as lunchroom daily expectations. To support this process, Ms. Banks and Mr. Bagby will create a routine document to be followed and will model that expectations for the staff. After receiving procedures, it is essential that staff follow protocols with consistency to help create a positive climate for all.
Feeling Overwhelmed- It has been brought to administration that staff need support in regards to needing time to look at curriculum and collaborate. Department Chairs will meet with subject area teams and determine the time needed for collaboration. A schedule will be provided in order to streamline this process and avoid having too many subs in the building.
We are in NEED of a School Sunshine Committee & Emergency Management Team. If you are not on a school team (such as PBIS, Leadership, and etc…). We need people to sign up and support.RMS Committee Sign Up Link
Monthly Friday Treat Sign Up - So far, we only have the Math Team and Counseling Teams signed up. Please use the link to sign up. https://signup.com/go/QpqXhfa
Have a Great Week!
Special Education Communication: Ms. Armstrong
Failure Review Meetings:
IEP conferences are required for any students with IEPs who are identified as in danger of failing. The conference must be held to provide enough time to allow the student to make progress and the opportunity for the student to still pass the class. If any student is in danger of failing, general education teachers, must maintain/produce evidence of strategies/methods that have been used to document how modifications are implemented in accordance with the student’s IEP. Parent contact must also be documented. This documentation will be used as evidence to present in Failure Review conferences. Lack of evidence could result in the student’s grade being changed to a passing grade.
For documentation purposes, please use the folders that were given to you at the start of the school year. Attached, you will find a copy of the Lesson Plan Supplement, as well as a modification/assignment documentation sheet. If you need any assistance, please see Ms. Armstrong, SPED Department Chairperson, Room 206.
Special Education Referral:
If any student is struggling in your classes, please provide strategies, interventions/or differentiation instruction to assist the student. It’s not good to tell a parent that their child needs to be referred for special education testing, but rather, you should always be prepared to provide some documentation of what you’ve done to assist the student. This comment could suggest to some parents that you have given up on their child. Students who exhibit signs that he or she is struggling doesn’t always mean that they need to be provided Special Education services.
Modifications:
Modifications are the cornerstone of a student’s Individualized Education Program and it’s imperative that teachers understand each student’s educational programming needs. Some teachers have not signed for their modifications. A responsibility list will be sent through email to teachers Monday. Please review the list and go to the appropriate teacher to sign for your modifications.
Special Education Teachers: B. Armstrong, Room 206; M. Chambers, Room 177/304/195; T. Davis, Room 303/222/194; D. Grimmett, Room 177/209; Ms. Craig- New Hire.
